Lenovo gave the world a refreshing look at its new portable display, the ThinkVIsion M14. It’s a USB-C monitor that has the form factor of a laptop, which allows users to extend their screen space on-the-go.

The ThinkVision M14 features a 14-inch 300 nit Full HD display (1920 x 1080) measuring in at only 4.6mm thickness. The form factor of the display made it highly portable, weighing in at under 600g and comes with a protective cover for easy transport.

New USB 3.2 Standard Heading To PCs This Year; Set To Yield 20Gbps Transfer Speeds

After having been in a lull for little more than two years, it appears that the USB-IF is finally announcing that the new USB 3.2 standard will be made available this year. Along with the relevant USB 3.2-capable controllers.

Along with the announcement,  USB-IF also renamed its USB lineup as listed below:

  • USB 3.0 is now USB 3.2 Gen 1 with a 5Gbps data connection
  • USB 3.1 is now USB 3.2 Gen 2 with a 10Gbps data connection
  • USB 3.2 is now USB 3.2 Gen 2xe with a 20Gbps data connection

As the port still uses the USB-C connector, it is backwards compatible with current USB 3.2 Gen 2 devices. However, with supported devices, we can see a theoretical top speed of about 20Gbps, or approximately 2.5GB/s. For context, at that speed, a 4GB file would complete a transfer in just two seconds with the new connection.

With the announcement, we can expect PC components and motherboard manufacturers to feature bake in the new connectors into their upcoming products. It is predicted, though, that the earliest products with the new USB standard will only be showcased sometime in the second half of 2019.

Even so, with this announcement, 2019 is shaping up to becoming a speedy year. As more high-speed devices will be introduced in the market, and not just limited to Thunderbolt 3. Additionally, we may also see cheaper high-speed devices appear on the market, such as external drives and card readers that don’t necessarily require the lightning-fast Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.

“Thunderclap” Vulnerability Found To Be Affecting Systems With Thunderbolt Ports

A team of researchers have discovered a new security vulnerability involving the Thunderbolt data transfer specification. They’ve dubbed the vulnerability “Thunberclap” and it affects systems that use the Thunderbolt interface.

The way the vulnerability works is by taking advantage of direct-memory-access (DMA) that Thunderbolt devices have. For context, DMA allows Thunderbolt devices to read and write data on a system’s memory without permission from the operating system.

This level of access is usually only granted to internal components, such as GPUs. But with the Thunderbolt interface – used by USB-C connectors – capable of replicating those functions when plugged in externally, the interface is given the same level of access. This, in turn, makes it vulnerable to Thunderclap.

Fortunately, fixes have already been rolled out. Apple has fixed the specific vulnerability exploited by the researchers in macOS 10.12.4, while Windows 10 devices using version 1803 or newer should also be safe from Thunderclap. All that said, it’s still a good reminder to not plug your USB-C devices into chargers that you don’t trust or look absolutely questionable.

Bitcoin History Part 10: The 184 Billion BTC Bug

Bitcoin History Part 10: The 184 Million BTC Bug

There was something unusual about Bitcoin block 74638. It was Core developer Jeff Garzik who first spotted it, commenting on the “quite strange” transaction outputs, which stood at 92233720368.54 BTC apiece. That wasn’t meant to happen. Within an hour, another forum user had started a thread titled “overflow bug serious” in which he implored “We need a fix asap.” It was Aug. 15, 2010, and Bitcoin had just encountered its biggest bug yet.

Also read: Bitcoin History Part 9: Mt. Gox Is Born

Bitcoin Encounters a Very Big Bug

Bitcoin had already endured at least four major bugs or vulnerabilities prior to the integer overflow bug that led to 184 billion BTC being created out of thin air. The Bitcoin wiki lists 40 bugs of varying degrees of severity, with the most recent discovered in February 2019. CVE-2010-5139, however, was unlike anything the Bitcoin community had ever encountered in 2010 — or has seen since.

Bitcoin History Part 10: The 184 Billion BTC Bug

The bug that Garzik, among others, uncovered in block 74638 was Bitcoin’s first inflation bug. Given that the cryptocurrency’s total supply is meant to be capped at 21 million, the addition of 184 billion coins was a major problem to put it mildly. An integer overflow had caused a negative total transaction value. As Bitcointalk forum user Ifm explained:

Normally the inputs are equal to the outputs of a transaction. The exception is when there is a ‘fee’ charged for the transaction. The net allows anyone to voluntarily pay any amout for a fee. So when the sum was negative the difference from the input looked like a fee. It slipped thru all the checks.

An unknown attacker had discovered the bug and used it to generate a ridiculously high number of bitcoins. Had they set their sights on a more modest total, it is possible their exploit might have lain undiscovered for longer than the 90 minutes it took for the scheme to be spotted. Once discovered, it was inevitable that a patch would be rushed through, and so it came to pass. Within two hours of Common Vulnerability and Exposure 2010-5139 striking, Core developers Gavin Andresen and Satoshi Nakamoto were on the case, and the 184 billion BTC transaction was purged from block 74638.

Bitcoin History Part 10: The 184 Billion BTC Bug

“Once more than 50% of the node power is upgraded and the good chain overtakes the bad, the 0.3.10 nodes will make it hard for any bad transactions to get any confirmations,” reassured Satoshi. Bitcoin’s creator took a bug of this magnitude seriously, and posted more than a dozen times in the thread devoted to its discovery and eradication. Within five months of the incident, Satoshi would leave the community he founded for good. In his wake, he left a cryptocurrency that would prove strong enough to survive the next eight years and beyond.

Fototriever Helps You Keep Track of your iPhone Photos

Fototriever means no more searching and scrolling through endless photos, simply speak or enter search text, and the photo is quickly found. “I kept looking at photos on my camera, and I couldn’t remember who some of the people were on some of the trips I was on,” says Fototriever co-creator Dr. Alan Jeroff. “In the olden days I would always write on the back of the photo who the people were in the photo. That’s simply not possible in today’s digital-only world!” Dr. Jeroff discussed this issue with his associate, Dr. Dennis Nimchuk, and they decided to hire a computer science programmer from the University of British Columbia to help them develop the app. The pair are thrilled with the results. “When I was in Palm Springs at a tennis match, I took photos. Back in the hotel room later that evening is when I tagged them. I was able to tag them by players, score, stats and opponents,” continues Dr. Jeroff. “Then, I was able to use my voice to search for the photos by simply saying a player’s name, the score, stats, or opponent, and the correct photos were instantly retrieved and displayed!” By using Fototriever photographers ...

Apple files patent for self-heating display that protects foldable phones from cracking in cold

A recently filed patent indicates that Apple could be working on a self-heating screen that doesn’t crack when it bends in the cold.

Though the patent might seem a little strange at first glance, it could be the saviour for foldable devices in our harsh Canadian climate.

The patent goes over a few different ways of heating up the section of the screen that folds. These methods range from lighting up the pixels on the fold to installing some form of heating hardware.

The patent also shows off a magnet that could be used to keep the phone closed in order to prevent it from opening when it isn’t warm enough.

Overall, this could be another Apple patent that never sees the light of day, but given that a number of smartphone manufacturers revealed foldable devices at MWC, it’s possible the Cupertino, California-based tech giant could be developing its own take on the concept.

It’s also worth noting that another Apple patent related to a device with a foldable display was uncovered few just a few days ago.

BMO’s iOS and Android banking app updated with new Interac e-transfer request feature

BMO’s Mobile Banking app for Android and iOS has been updated with a number of useful new features, including the ability to send requests for e-transfers and new bill payee shortcuts.

To find the new request feature, navigate to the Interac e-transfer section of the banking app and select ‘More.’ While this feature probably isn’t useful for everyone, it could come in handy if you frequently split the bill with friends when buying food or other items.

It also means that special friend in your life can no longer use the “oh sorry, I forgot” excuse when it comes to transferring the cash they owe you.

Along with e-transfer requests and payee shortcuts, BMO has also added additional in-app ‘Help’ menu options, as well as compatibility fixes for iOS 12.2. This is a good move on BMO’s part because since updating to iOS 12.2, I’ve found that the banking app frequently lags and crashes.

BMO’s banking app is available in the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store.

Google Maps AR navigation now available to some Android and iOS users

Google Maps’ upcoming augmented reality (AR) navigation feature is currently being tested by a number of ‘Local Guides’ across the platform’s iOS and Android app, according to various reports and a reader-submitted tip to MobileSyrup.

The app’s still-in-development AR update layers augmented reality walking direction overlays and business listings on top of a live camera view. The idea behind these physical AR directions is to help Maps users navigate around large cities given how notoriously inaccurate GPS is in urban environments.

Above is a brief reader-submitted video showing Google Maps’ new AR features in action.

In theory, if your smartphone’s GPS happens to be acting a little wonky, these AR arrows and other signage should help you get to where you’re going more smoothly.

Google is testing the feature across both iOS and Android simultaneously. Those who are part of the program also need smartphones compatible with ARCore, Google’s augmented reality app development framework, or ARKit, Apple’s competing AR toolkit.

Those participating in the beta test have also been told by Google to update their app to the latest version of Google Maps, though the feature is enabled through a server-side update.

Local Guides are Google Maps users that participate in the platforms’ crowd-sourced features, including adding reviews, sharing photographs and updating location information.

Google’s ‘Local Guides’ Maps system features 10 levels, with 9to5Google reporting that only higher-tier members getting invited to test out the platform’s upcoming AR features.

Thanks to the reader who submitted the tip. MobileSyrup has omitted the reader’s name so they don’t get removed from the beta program.

CRTC launches review on mobile wireless market, examining choices, affordability

CRTC

The CRTC has launched a review on “the state” of the mobile wireless market and “whether further action is required to improve choice and affordability for Canadians.”

The February 28th press release said the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is also asking for comments on whether or not Wi-Fi-first MVNOs should have mandated access to the networks of the Big Three, “until they are able to establish themselves in the market.”

The Commission is also looking to see whether regulatory measures are needed when 5G is deployed in the Canadian market. Canadians have until May 15th to make submissions.

“While the wireless industry has grown and evolved over the last few years, progress has been slow in certain areas. We are concerned as to whether the needs of Canadians are being fully met. We want to ensure that all Canadians benefit from a robust and competitive mobile wireless market that provides a choice of affordable and innovative services,” Ian Scott, CRTC’s chairperson, said in the release.

The announcement of the review comes two days after Innovation, Science and Economic Minister Navdeep Bains announced his proposal for a directive that would require the CRTC to consider “competition, affordability, consumer interest and innovation” when making decisions.

This is the second time the federal government has issued a proposed directive to the CRTC in 13 years. In particular, Bains told MobileSyrup that the proposed directive was “prompted” after specific decisions relating to Wi-Fi first MVNOs were made in 2018.

There is speculation that Tesla is planning to lower the cost of some of its vehicles, including the Model 3, but stay tuned at 5pm ET for further details regarding the announcement.

Varjo’s VR-1 virtual reality headset features ‘human-eye resolution’ display technology

Varjo’s VR-1 virtual reality (VR) headset is looking to break into the VR market with its ultra-high-resolution display the company claims features a “human-eye resolution” panel.

The headset is targeted at businesses, which makes sense given that it’s priced at €5,995 (roughly, $8,976 CAD) and requires users shelling out an additional €995 (roughly, $1,489 CAD) a year for the headset’s services and support package. This brings the cost of the headset in Canada above $10,000 CAD.

However, the most interesting innovation is the VR-1 headset’s main display. The technology consists of a 1080p ‘Micro-OLED’ screen that features 3,000 pixels per inch (ppi), according to VarjoIn comparison, Google and LG’s high-resolution prototype VR headset, which the companies showed off last year, only features 1,443ppi.

This resolution is also only in the headset’s main display. The VR-1 features a secondary screen that expands the user’s peripheral vision but features less pixel density. Both screens provide the user with an 87-degree field of view, according to Varjo.

The headset also includes advanced eye-tracking that ensures whatever the user is looking at is in focus.

The support package that users have to pay for includes a commercial license for Varjo’s eye-tracking software, response to service requests within one business day, one-year limited warranty and free returns and service.

The company also sells another package for €1,995 (roughly, $2,984 CAD) that brings someone to you to teach you how to set up and use the headset.

To get the headset up and running, users need to buy at least two base stations for the device to enable room-scale tracking. Varjo doesn’t sell its base stations, but the VR-1 works with the HTC Vive’s motion-tracking base stations, which cost €150 (roughly, $225 CAD).

If you are planning on using software that requires controller input, you’ll have to buy your own controllers as well since the Varjo headset doesn’t come with any. You can pair the headset with any SteamVR compatible controllers, says Varjo.

If you already have a set of VR base stations that support SteamVR 1.0 or 2.0, they’re also compatible with Varjo’s new high-end VR rig.

Google’s App Security program has caught issues in 1 million apps in 5 years

Google

Google has revealed that its Application Security Improvement Program has flagged vulnerabilities in one million Android apps since the program launched five years ago.

Google says it scans each app that is submitted to the Google Play Store to discover any vulnerabilities.  The company then flags these issues to the developer to help them fix it. Google likens the process to a doctor performing a routine physical.

Altogether, Google says its program has helped more than 300,000 developers fix their app issues. Specifically, the company says the program helped over 30,000 developers in 2018 alone.

In the same year, Google says it deployed the following six additional security vulnerability classes:

  • SQL Injection
  • File-based Cross-Site Scripting
  • Cross-App Scripting
  • Leaked Third-Party Credentials
  • Scheme Hijacking
  • JavaScript Interface Injection

Amazon launches Project Zero to eliminate counterfeit products

Tech giant Amazon has launched ‘Project Zero,’ a new program designed to eliminate counterfeit products from its online retail platform.

A February 28th blog post from the company says that the program uses advanced technology, machine learning and innovation to detect counterfeits of brands’ products.

Amazon says that automated protections will continuously scan its store and “proactively remove suspected counterfeits.” There’s a catch though: brands first have to give access to their logos, trademarks and any other data about their brand. Amazon says it plans to “scan over five billion product listings every day, looking for suspected counterfeits.”

Amazon says companies will also be able to remove listings on their own.

“Previously, brands would need to report a counterfeit to Amazon, and we would then investigate these reports and take action. With Project Zero, brands no longer need to contact us to remove a counterfeit listing,” Amazon said.

Amazon is also introducing what it calls “product serialization,” allowing companies to “individually scan and confirm the authenticity of each one of the brand’s products that are purchased in Amazon’s stores.”

The service will provide a unique code for every unit that is manufactured. Brands put this code on their product, which would be done as part of the manufacturing process.

“With this product sterilization service, we can now detect and stop counterfeiting for every product unit before it reaches a customer,” Amazon said.

The Verge reported that the project, for now, is an invite-only program, meaning only Amazon’s chosen brands will be allowed to participate.

Apple Watch sales accounted for half of the smartwatch market in 2018: study

Despite a general sense that the smartwatch industry is on the decline, the Apple Watch is still selling well, according to a recent study from Strategy Analytics.

The analytics firm says that 9.2 million Apple Watch units shipped worldwide during Q4 2018, an increase of 18 percent from 7.8 million units in Q4 2017. Smartwatch shipments worldwide also grew by a total of 56 percent, hitting 18 million units in the quarter.

That said, Apple’s dominant position in the smartwatch market is shrinking according to the firm’s data, with its share hitting 51 percent during the quarter. This is down from 67 percent last year over the same time period. With this in mind though, Apple still holds the top spot in global smartwatch market share, following by Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin.

Apple doesn’t reveal how many Apple Watches it sells in its quarterly earnings reports. The tech giant lumps the wearable in with other accessories such as its AirPods, HomePod and even Beats headphones, in a category Apple calls ‘Other Products.’

In Q1 2019, Apple’s ‘Other Products’ category generated $7.3 billion USD (roughly $9.6 billion CAD). The most recent Apple Watch is the Series 4, the tech giant’s first major revision of the wearable since its initial release back in 2014.

The watch features a larger display, additional Watch Faces and a built-in ECG feature that isn’t yet available in Canada.

Google introduces complaint form for Google Maps to report fraudulent activity

Google has introduced a complaint form for its Maps iOS, Android and desktop app, allowing users to report misleading or fraudulent activity.

According to Google, the form can be used to identify “misleading information or fraudulent activity” in the app with respect to the name, phone number, or the URL of a business.

That said, Google states that submitting a form “does not guarantee that any action will be taken.”

“Also, if your complaint is not related to fraudulent activity on the name, phone number, or URL of the business, we will not be able to review your complaint,” reads the form.

You’ll need to include your full name, email address, the name of the organization getting impacted, and details regarding the “malicious content.”

Cryptocurrency Accounts for Less Than 2% of All Japanese Money Laundering Cases

Money Laundering Cases With Cryptocurrency Less Than 1.7% of All in Japan

Money laundering cases related to cryptocurrencies in Japan have increased significantly in 2018. Nevertheless, their number remains a fraction of the total. According to the Japanese press, the majority of reported money laundering instances actually involve banks and other traditional financial institutions.

Most Instances Involve Banks and Credit Card Companies

The number of cases of suspected money laundering linked to cryptocurrencies reported in Japan surpassed 7,000 last year, the Japan Times reported, quoting the National Police Agency. The figure represents a 10-fold increase in comparison with the 669 cases registered between April and December of 2017, when crypto exchange operators were obliged to report suspicious transactions that may be linked to the movement of illicit funds.

Cryptocurrency Accounts for Less Than 2% of All Japanese Money Laundering Cases

The Japanese police detailed that in some of the cases, users with different names and birth dates have been sharing the same identification document. Others have been found to log in from foreign jurisdictions, despite providing Japanese addresses in their accounts.

In 2018 alone, 417,465 cases of suspected money laundering and other abuses were reported to the law enforcement agencies in Japan. That’s over 17,000 more cases than the previous year.

It should be noted, however, that the majority of these cases involve banks and other financial institutions, comprising 346,014 reports, and credit card companies 15,114. That means the cases related to cryptocurrencies, the exact number of which is 7,096, are less than 1.7 percent of the total.

Japanese Police to Train Data Analysis Specialists

The National Police Agency of Japan plans to take steps in response to the rising number of suspicious transactions. One of the initiatives involves the training of specialists in financial data analysis. Artificial intelligence technology may be employed to detect illegal trades. These systems can be taught to recognize patterns related to money laundering and other illicit transactions.

Cryptocurrency Accounts for Less Than 2% of All Japanese Money Laundering Cases

The Japan Times points out that the country has also seen some large cryptocurrency heists in recent years. These include the Mt. Gox hack in 2014 when $433 million worth of cryptocurrency was stolen from the digital asset exchange. Another attack, against the Japanese exchange Coincheck last January, led to the loss of approximately $550 million of the cryptocurrency nem.

Cases such as these were the main reason for a decision by the Japan’s Financial Services Agency to order several crypto trading platforms based in the country to improve their internal controls. The regulator also asked for the introduction of preventive measures against money laundering.

Samsung Galaxy S10 series pre-installed screen protectors come with 90-day warranty

Samsung is preparing to release its latest line of smartphones in Canada, the Galaxy S10 and S10+ and the S10e.

The devices will all be available on March 8th in Samsung Stores and at most Canadian carriers. The Android-powered device also comes with a few firsts for the Galaxy line, including an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and a pre-installed screen protector.

Ahead of the phone’s release, Samsung is answering questions from interested users regarding how the screen protector and fingerprint sensor interact with each other.

Samsung notes that not all screen protectors will work well with fingerprint sensors and that’s why the “Galaxy S10 will be shipped with factory pre-installed screen protector manufactured by Samsung.” The company notes this is to “increase overall customer experiences with the improved screen durability and full functionality of the Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor.”

If you do have issues with your screen protector and need it replaced, Samsung says there is a 90-day warranty on the accessory when you purchase your device. However, if a replacement is needed and the screen protector is out of warranty, then it will cost you $29.99 USD (roughly $38 CAD). Samsung says that official S10 Samsung branded screen protectors will be readily available through its carrier partners and at Samsung stores.

“To ensure the full functionality of the Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor on Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, Samsung strongly encourage our carrier and retail partners to carry Samsung branded screen protector as the replacement purchase option in stores. We cannot guarantee the experiences with screen protectors made of traditional glass and polyurethane materials,” writes Samsung in a recent press release.

In Canada, the S10 line starts at $1,019.99 CAD for the S10e, $1,259.99 S10 for the standard S10 and $1,419.99 for the S10+.

Huawei pleads not guilty to charges of stealing T-Mobile secrets

Huawei

China-based telecommunications equipment company Huawei’s device subsidiary has plead not guilty in a Washington, Seattle court to charges of stealing robotic technology from U.S. telecommunications carrier T-Mobile.

This is the first court appearance that Huawei has made since the U.S. government charged the company, its global CFO Meng Wanzhou and its subsidiary Skycom, with 13 counts of bank and wire fraud charges.

Reuters reported on February 28th that the companies were “arraigned” and that a trial has been set for March 2nd, 2020.

According to prosecutors, Huawei stole information from T-Mobile between 2012 and 2014. Huawei could face fines of more than $5 million USD (roughly $6.5 million CAD).

Bloomberg reported that the court appearance happened a day before Canada’s deadline regarding the extradition hearings against Meng. Charges against her relate to deceiving banks and violating U.S. trade sanctions against Iran.

Vancouver authorities arrested Meng in December. Meng is scheduled to appear in court on March 6th.

Fortnite Season 8 features pirates, volcanoes and an Apex Legends-like ‘ping’ system’

Fortnite Season 8 volcano

Developer Epic Games has rolled out the eighth season of content for its massively popular Fortnite multiplayer game.

In Season 8, players will be able to experience new locations, weapons skins and emotes. This time around, content is themed around the rivaling pirates Ice King and the fiery Prisoner. Players will be able to use a new pirate-inspired cannon that can deal massive damage or be used to blast themselves to reach higher places.

Meanwhile, a new volcano has taken up the north of the map where Lazy Links used to be and can cause damage to anyone who touches its lava streams. Finally, volcanic vents will be scattered throughout the map that can launch players and vehicles into the air.

Outside of all that themed content, Season 8 also adds a ‘danger’ point mechanic that takes a cue from rival battle royale game Apex Legends‘ inventive ping system.

Now, players can double-click the hotkey to leave a marker that notifies teammates of points of interest, such as an enemy’s last-sighted location.

A full breakdown of Season 8 content can be found on Epic’s website.

BMW and Daimler join forces on autonomous technology

BMW and the Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler have joined forces to develop autonomous vehicles.

This isn’t the first time high-profile automakers have decided to work together on self-driving technology. Ford is working with the Volkswagen automotive group, and GM and Honda are playing nice together as well.

All of these companies are looking to work with another legacy automaker to help share the cost and the information needed to develop SAE level three, four and five autonomous technology for cars.

BMW’s press release mentions that the companies hope to have this technology ready by the mid-2020s, which puts the timeline anywhere between six and maybe eight years away.

“As we continue to pursue our strategy, we are combining the expertise of two technology leaders, said Klaus Fröhlich a member of the BMW auto group’s board of management.

These two German automakers working together makes sense since they’re both German companies that typically build higher-end vehicles.

The automakers are already developing their own self-driving technology. BMW has been working on its tech since 2006, and it now has 70 test vehicles using what it describes as state-of-the-art technology.

Daimler is working on SAE levels three, four and five self-driving and it plans to launch tests in Silicon Valley with Bosch sometime in 2019.

Either way, it’s reassuring that the two companies are working together since legacy automakers seem like they might be trailing behind tech companies like Waymo and Uber when it comes to self-driving technology.

Facebook invests $2.5 million into Canadian local news organizations

Facebook

Facebook Canada has launched a Local News Accelerator that aims to support Canadian news organizations.

As part of the launch, Facebook has invested $2.5 million CAD into the program. According to the company, the Local News Accelerator “will be built with a Canada-first lens” and is intended to “address the unique challenges that local news publishers face.”

Currently, the program will develop digital strategies alongside 10-15 news organizations and provide each of them with grant funding to implement these solutions.

Facebook’s Local News Accelerator comes amid increasing concerns over the spread of fake news on the internet. A recent study from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) found that 70 percent of Canadians are concerned that fake news could impact elections in Canada. This follows a June 2017 report from Canada’s Communications Security Establishment (CSE) agency warning that it is “very likely” that hackers will try to influence Canada’s 2019 federal election.

Throughout all of this, Facebook has been repeatedly criticized for being a platform through which users can share misinformation. The social network revealed in September 2017 that Russian operatives shared roughly 80,000 inflammatory posts focused on race, immigration and LGBT rights leading up to the November 2016 U.S. presidential election. In January 2018, the company acknowledged that its role in the sharing of these ads and other fake news stories can sometimes be damaging to the democratic process.

To help prevent this, Facebook has rolled out various initiatives over time that aim to combat fake news and support legitimate news organizations. In October 2017, the company teamed up with digital literacy company Media Smarts to better support politicians in maintaining online safety. The company also worked with politicians ahead of Ontario’s June 2018 provincial election to help them secure and verify digital information.

As part of its elections integrity efforts, Facebook also launched a fact-checking program last June that uses third-party agents to add context to stories or crack down on fake news posts when necessary.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: How A.I. Is Transforming Medicine

Ever wondered how A.I is changing medicine? Find out how by checking out this guide to artificial intelligence in healthcare.

The world market for artificial intelligence in healthcare is heading for staggering growth. It’s being driven by mainly North American investment. It’s expected to increase from around two billion dollars to thirty-six billion dollars by 2025.

So what’s going on here? You may already be a part of the digital healthcare revolution if you wear a fitness tracker. But, new technology is getting cleverer by the day.

Here are some of the ways that A.I. is changing the face of medicine.

Consultations Using Digital Technology

There have been some big breakthroughs that now make complex digital consultations a reality. There’s been a huge leap forward in deep learning data, for example.

There are now millions of files to draw from in an instant which help get straight to the heart of the matter. This lets systems make much better decisions about what questions need asking. They’re now also able to comprehend complicated language.

This means patients no longer have to select predefined options. These may not be totally appropriate for whatever problem they have. Used alongside A.I. in genetics, this technology now makes it far easier to direct people to the right places for help.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Robots and Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Robots are able to check data from medical records as well as guide a surgeon’s instruments during an operation. This has the effect of a big reduction in the length of a person’s hospital stay.

Digital surgery tends to be less invasive, so there’s less chance of having to heal from big wounds. Studies have shown that A.I. assisted procedures can lead to fewer complications.

Robots can also draw from previous operations so that new techniques are more efficient. They allow surgeons to operate with far greater precision than ever before.

More Efficient Administration

It’s estimated that using A.I. to automate administrative work will save the healthcare system billions of dollars. Voice-to-text technology will make ordering tests and prescribing medicines much more efficient.

Some systems can analyze thousands of notes and from this create better treatment plans. It’s thought almost fifty percent of Americans are taking a prescribed drug of some sort.

Non-adherence is a major problem. This is when people don’t take their meds.  Demographics, cost to the patient, and where they live all play a part in this. A.I. uses algorithmic tools to target patients who are likely to miss taking medication.

This potential cause of waste which can drive up the cost of health insurance can be averted by A.I. to some extent. Check out Agile Health review to compare private health plan options that offer great value.

Virtual Nursing Staff

The big advantage here is that virtual nurses are available 24/7. It’s estimated that the healthcare industry could save twenty billion dollars by investing in them.

Virtual nurses are able to answer questions, as well as monitor patients. They can help to reduce unnecessary hospital visits. That eases the pressure on medical professionals.

Our Futures Lie in A.I.

It’s clear that artificial intelligence in healthcare is having a massive impact on the medical treatment we all receive. It’s one of the fastest growing industries in our lifetime.

Check out other ways here that digital technology is transforming our lives.

Cloud Computing for the Next Generation – Tech Joins Hands With Healthcare

Of late, there has been a noteworthy shift in the healthcare industry from usual storage of data to utilizing technology in order to reduce costs, facilitate the patient care tasks and to gain efficiency. In fact, Black Book Research found out that 95% of the hospital CIOs are rapidly hiring staffs, who can manage, configure and support a cloud infrastructure that is HIPAA-compliant.

What is the reason behind this shift? The services offered by the cloud computing vendors like Google Cloud, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud are ever-evolving. Moreover, 93% of the CIOs, as per a survey, report that cloud technology is allowing the access of more agile products and services with the expansion of healthcare data. With the altering cloud landscape, what can be expected in the near future?

Blockchain and Security

For the coming cloud generation, security is a huge consideration which moves forward with the help of cloud tech vendors and healthcare companies alike. The provider of cloud technology should make sure through regulatory audits that all types of security requirements are met effectively. It is also made sure that they are leveraging the best asset access controls through an amalgamation of token-based security and biometric protocols.

Besides security, there are multiple EHRs within a same healthcare system which can lead to breaches in patient safety and identification. Simultaneously, the promise done by Blockchain for improving records and enhancing security is getting riper and can this too can be moulded into the cloud.

cloud-computing

The health-tech industry is wrapping a great year!

The big shot tech companies like Amazon and Apple have been exploring opportunities to bring forth their products into the medical and mainstream sector and they also made few vital hires throughout those lines. In response to this, the conventional health-care companies, including health plans and pharmaceutical makers faked their own partnerships with the technology developers to let them improve their customer experience. Let’s take a quick look at the top picks for the predictions on health care industry.

  • Wearables can also track your blood pressure

In the year 2018, the Apple Watch brought into the scene an electrocardiogram which could track the heart rhythm of the user and also watch out for the possible irregularities which might include a typical kind of arrhythmia called atrial fibrillation. This company achieved the clearance from different regulators for the brand new ECG feature. Now Apple Watch will introduce a new health feature arms race for the wearable market. Different companies like Alphabet and Samsung will most likely require setting up different breakthroughs. Someone will figure out a device for tracking blood pressure without a cuff.

  • New tech will join hands with Medicare Advantage

Majority don’t relate with health plans but the executives who work for a growing crop of Medicare Advantage plans are trying their best to alter that. When the baby boomers gradually age into Medicare, there are many who receive advantages through their private plans which are authorized by the government and this is called Medicare Advantage. Such plans have been the most rapid in adopting all sorts of new technologies due to the way in which they get paid. They also make money by taking on the risk of caring for an entire population. Tech has got more and more sophisticated with wearables and with the expansion and acceptance of new devices. There is in fact a lot that can be done to monitor people remotely. While not all would reap the benefits of tracking heart issues with wearables, yet some would definitely.

  • Amazon enters the health insurance industry

If you have to understand the overarching strategy that Amazon has for health care, you have to join lots of puzzle pieces together. In the year 2018, all those who closely followed the strategies taken by Amazon received few hints which indicated a rather more enthusiastic plan. In the year 2019, Amazon will probably make a bold play while entering the field of health insurance. In fact 2019 could be the year when Amazon adds few big pieces to the puzzle to reveal bigger goals in the health care industry.

Ways to improve your health using technology

Fitness trackers are everywhere as there is a sudden increase in the number of people all over the world who have become health conscious. The Australian company Mr Vitamins which is a trusted provider of different health and fitness supplements also claim that there is a rise in the number of people who are trying their best to choose the healthiest products for their body.
