Black Shark 2 Pro Goes Official: Features Snapdragon 855 Plus, UFS 3.0 Storage, Improved Grip

Thanks to its powerful specs, the Black Shark 2 which was released into Malaysia a few months ago is certainly something to behold. However, the Xiaomi-affiliate gaming phone company has one-upped itself by unveiling the new Black Shark 2 Pro earlier this week.

As you might expect from its Pro moniker, the newly announced model carries a number of upgrades over the original Black Shark 2. Among them is a new processor in the form of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus as well as UFS 3.0-based internal storage.

At the same time, the Black Shark 2 Pro’s 6.39-inch AMOLED display has better latency than the original model at 34.7ms and 240Hz touch report rate although its refresh rate is still 60Hz. Black Shark has also implemented new design to the back part of Black Shark 2 Pro in order to improve its grip as compared to the original model.

Black Shark 2 Pro is also equipped with a 13 MP sensor for its secondary rear camera which a slight upgrade over the original 12MP camera. The phone also features two RGB lights on its back to cater those gamers that are living the #RGBLife although the company did retain the same 4000mAh battery from the non-Pro model.

In China, the Black Shark 2 Pro is priced at CNY 2999 (about RM 1802) for the 12GB/128GB model while the 12GB/256GB variant can be obtained for CNY 3999 (about RM 2402). It is not known at the moment whether the phone will be released in Malaysia or otherwise although Black Shark Malaysia representative did posts this image from the launch event in China on its official Facebook page.

Hobbs & Shaw: How Does Its Rotten Tomatoes Score Compare to Other Fast & Furious Movies?

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw has been released, garnering 71% ‘fresh’ on the Tomatometer. This continues the franchise’s ‘fresh’ streak that started back in 2011 with Fast Five.

The Fast & Furious franchise started way back in 2001 with Rob Cohen’s Point-Break-with-cars The Fast and the Furious. The film received mixed reviews from critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 5.37/10). However, it’s successful run at the global box office, raking in $US 207 million with a production budget of $US 38 million meant that a sequel was inevitable.

However, things only got worse from that point on. 2003 saw the release of 2 Fast 2 Furious which played like a cheap and frat boy-esque continuation of the relatively intriguing first film. Only 36% of the Rotten Tomatoes certified critics gave the film a positive rating (average score: 4.75/10). The box office numbers aren’t so bright either. 2 Fast 2 Furious had double the budget of its predecessor, but only raked in $29 million more.

The poor ratings continued in 2006 with the release of Justin Lin’s Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift (which in my opinion is the worst film in the franchise). All of the old cast members were gone, replaced by fresh faces and a new setting. It received a mere 38% (average score: 4.91/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, a slight increase from the second film. However, the film was an utter disappointment at the global box office, grossing merely $US 158 million with a production budget of $US 85 million.

The fourth film, which I personally quite enjoy as it sees the return of many of the original cast of characters infiltrate a cartel, received the lowest rating in the franchise — 29% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 4.57/10. But, the film did accomplish a couple of things. One, it grossed over $US 363 million worldwide with the same budget as Tokyo Drift and two, it started the trend of stupidly titled Fast & Furious movies.

Fast Five proved that third time really is the charm. Justin Lin, who directed Tokyo Drift and Fast and Furious returned to the helm, this time with a completely different gameplan. Instead of focusing on street racing, Lin decided to make a heist film that happens to feature street racers. He also brought back all the fan favourites from the first few movies and introduced The Rock. This would prove to be a winning formula as Fast Five not only became the first movie in the franchise to get a ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes (77% with an average score of 6.39/10) but also turned the franchise into a global phenomenon. It grossed $US 626 million worldwide.

Hobbs & Shaw

Since then, all the movies have continued to receive positive ratings from critics, with James Wan’s Furious 7 the only one to touch the 81% mark.

  • Fast & Furious 6 — 70% (average score: 6.22/10)
  • Furious 7 — 81% (average score: 6.67/10)
  • The Fate of the Furious — 67% (average score: 6.15/10)
  • Hobbs & Shaw — 71% (6.11/10)

More than the Rotten Tomatoes percentage, I think the average critics’ score is a far more fascinating stat. The percentage reflects the percentage of the RT certified critics that gave the film a positive rating. To simplify, if there are 10 critics and seven of which gives the film a thumbs up, while three gives the film a thumbs down, said film will receive a 70% ‘on Rotten Tomatoes. The average score, on the other hand, tabulates the actual rating each critic gives the film and calculates the ‘mean/average’.

So, looking at the Fast & Furious franchise, all the movies received an average critic score that ranges between 4.5 – 6.6 — the highest being Furious 7‘s 6.67 and the lowest being number four’s 4.57/10. In other words, the general critical consensus of the franchise is that it ranges from ‘below average at worst to above average at best’.

Google Play Pass: A Subscription Service for Apps and Games, Currently On Trial

A set of screenshots has made its way into the Internet which further proved that Google is working on its own subscription service called Play Pass. In fact, the company has admitted that the service is indeed being tested right now.

References to the service were originally discovered last year within the Play Store framework. However, the new set of screenshots is among the first visual proof of its existence and we guess that it is big enough for Google to even admit that the service is currently on trial.

According to the screenshots, Play Pass provides users with access to a wide range of premium apps and games without ads or in-app purchases. The subscription service apparently costs USD 4.99 (about RM 21) per month although the fee might change once Play Pass is made accessible to the public.

Given the nature of the service, it is hard not to compare Google Play Pass to Apple Arcade which will be made available throughout the world later this year including Malaysia. However, we still have to wait for further announcement from Google though since the company didn’t reveal any launch date despite confirming the existing of Play Pass.

Here’s Why The realme C2 Should Be The Entry-Level Phone Of Your Choice

The entry-level market for smartphones is as competitive as ever, with solid contenders coming in every few months. One of them is the realme C2, which made its way to Malaysia back in May. It will be getting a promotional discount on 5 August, which makes it one of the best entry-level phones to pick up.

To quickly recap, the realme C2 comes with a 6.1-inch HD+ display with a dewdrop notch, a MediaTek Helio P22 chipset, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The phone also comes with a 4000mAh battery.

In terms of cameras, the realme C2 comes with a 13MP + 2MP rear camera setup, and a 5MP front-facing camera in the dewdrop notch. And with its promotional price of RM349, it’s also one of the most affordable smartphones out there.

But does the realme C2 compare well against the competition? Let’s find out by pitting it against two phones from one of the most competitive brands out there, Xiaomi. In the same market segment, the company has the Redmi 7, as well as the Redmi 7A.

To start, both Redmi 7 and the Redmi 7A come with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, just like the realme C2. Similarly, both Xiaomi phones also come with a 4000mAh battery, and an HD+ display. Underneath their respective UI overlays, these devices also run Android 9 Pie.

With the similarities out of the way, what sets the realme C2 apart from the Redmi 7 and 7A? First, and probably most importantly, the realme C2 is more affordable than both Xiaomi devices, even if only temporarily. As mentioned earlier, the realme C2 will be priced at RM349 during its promotion period. This makes it more affordable than Redmi 7 and Redmi 7A which are priced at RM499 and RM399 respectively.

Then there’s the camera setup: Redmi 7 has a 12MP + 2MP rear camera combo, and an 8MP front-facing camera in a waterdrop notch. On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi 7A only has one 13MP main camera and a 5MP camera in front.

This puts the realme C2 ahead of the Redmi 7A. It’s a toss-up between the realme C2’s 13MP + 2MP rear camera combo and 5MP front-facing camera, or the Xiaomi Redmi 7’s 12MP + 2MP rear camera setup and 8MP front-facing camera.

And finally, there’s the size of the devices. As mentioned, the realme C2 measures in at 6.1 inches. While Redmi 7 comes in at a similar 6.26 inches, but the Redmi 7A is quite significantly smaller, at 5.45 inches. Unless you like smaller phones, it’s a choice between realme C2 and Redmi 7 again.

As mentioned earlier, the realme C2 will be getting a promotional price cut on 5 August, bringing its price down to RM349. You can find the promotion and more details about it, at the Official realme Store on Shopee.

Iron Man 3 Writer Talks About the Real Mandarin Debuting in Shang-Chi

Over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate and love Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 for its unique vision. It’s one of the wittiest Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date and has some excellent character exploration to go with it. However, I also understand the frustration fans felt, heck, still feel to this day because of Shane Black and co-screenwriter Drew Pearce’s treatment of the iconic Iron Man comic book villain, The Mandarin. In a plot twist, The Mandarin was revealed to be nothing but a comical drunken actor named Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley).

After massive backlash from fans, Marvel Studios released a short film titled All Hail the King which revealed that the “real Mandarin” is still out there. Since then, fans have eagerly anticipated the introduction of this popular villain. After years of waiting, it looks like we will finally be getting a proper version of The Mandarin as the main villain in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings. In an interview with Cinemablendwriter Drew Pearce mentioned that a number of modern interpretations of The Mandarin could be done well in the MCU, especially since Shang-Chi is being helmed by an Asian director.

“You know, and there are modern interpretations of The Mandarin that I think can work in the context of, particularly of a Marvel movie that has a much more grounded basis in Asian culture and has, frankly, Asian filmmakers and other Asian actors in its ensemble, and driving the story.

In our Iron Man movie, as you and everyone else knows, it was my feeling that if we did The Mandarin in many of the forms that he is most commonly known as, we were playing into the racial stereotypes that generated the character in the beginning. Yellow peril, you know. … That idea was what inspired our take on the Mandarin.”

In the same interview, Drew Pearce also mentioned that when he penned the script for All Hail the King, he made it very clear that The Mandarin was an ancient mantle. The villainous Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) made the mistake of using that ‘mantle’ thinking that it’s nothing but a fictional entity. It’s going to be really really cool to see the proper terrifying form of The Mandarin when Shang-Chi hits the big screen, especially if they cast a big name dramatic actor to play the role.

But if there is one issue, it’s that in the comics, The Mandarin is tied to the Iron Man character, the way Joker is to Batman. Since Tony Stark died in the MCU after his noble sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, The Mandarin is being introduced in Shang-Chi. So what will happen to the seeds previously planted in Iron Man 3 and All Hail the King? Drew Pearce doesn’t know for sure as well.

“I’ve also spoken to some of my friends at Marvel and of course I don’t know exactly what happens, but there’s a strong sense that everything will be revealed and nothing is being retconned. And that, at the end of the day, is all we can ask for. That, and the fact that, you know, they clearly think it’s going to be — he’s going to be the best adversary. And I trust in Marvel. In Marvel, we trust.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to be released in February 2021.

Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab S6: Features Snapdragon 855, Dual Camera, S Pen with Wireless Charging

Ahead of its Unpacked event next week, Samsung has unveiled its new Galaxy Tab S6 tablet last night. Equipped with a 10.5-inch 2450 x 1600 Super AMOLED display and powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, the new tablet also comes with several interesting features.

One of them is a new S Pen that is equipped with wireless charging capability. According to Samsung, the S Pen is able to deliver up to 10 hours of operational time with just 10 minutes of charge time. Users don’t need a separate wireless charger to charge it though as the S Pen can be charged directly on the Galaxy Tab S6 itself when it is magnetically attached on the rear side of the tablet.

At the same time, the Bluetooth-equipped stylus can also be used as a presentation controller and camera trigger just like the S Pen for Galaxy Note 9. Users are also apparently able to remotely control video playback and other yet-to-be-revealed functions through a gesture-based feature that Samsung called S Pen Air actions.

Other than that, the Galaxy Tab S6 also comes with a dual rear camera which features a 13MP wide-angle f/2.0 main snapper alongside a 5MP ultra-wide f/2.2 camera. There is also an 8MP selfie camera on the front part of the tablet.

Samsung has also included an on-screen fingerprint scanner for Galaxy Tab S6 which is the first tablet from the company to offer that feature. Just like Galaxy Tab S4, the new tablet also comes with built-in Samsung DeX mode that provides it with PC-like desktop environment.

That experience can be enhanced even further through the optional BookCover Keyboard accessory for the tablet which includes not only a keyboard but also touchpad and dedicated DeX button. The BookCover Keyboard also comes with a free angle stand and S Pen holder.

A 7040mAh battery which able to provide the 420 grams tablet with a video playback time of up to 15 hours completes its general specifications. To be available starting from late August, the Galaxy Tab S6 with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage goes for USD 649 (about RM 2,675) while the model with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage is priced at USD 729 (about RM 3,004).

Mixer for Android and iOS get chat leaderboards and more

Game streaming service Mixer just updated its main app for Android and iOS to include chat leaderboards and small UI improvements.

With the update, Channel chats now display a crown icon that users may tap to see the leaders over the last week, month, or all time. The system ranks the visitors by “how many sparks or embers they give to the streamer.”

The Mixer app also has the ability to fill a chat comment with empty space, which may discourage online trolls from disrupting the chat channel.

Besides that, the MixPlay button has found a new home in the submenu. As a feature unique to Mixer, MixPlay allows the viewers to take control of the video game played by the streamer.

Compared to industry strongholds like Twitcher, Mixer has a deeper integration in Microsoft cross-platform initiatives (Windows 10 and Xbox) and it brings a more interactive experience between viewers and streamers that rivals don’t offer.

The streaming service also announced a 12 percent monthly growth for the past two years.

The full changelog can be found here.

Facebook plans to read your mind with an AR headset

Facebook app on iPhone

You might think it’s creepy for Facebook to collect your personal data for the optimization of their service. Now, the social media giant is skipping over cyberspace and reading your mind directly with a pair of AR glasses.

Facebook has been developing its brain-reading computers since 2017 and the company gave its first update on July 30th, detailing their vision in a system that can “decode silent speech” without the need to implant a chipset into the brain.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, who collaborated with Facebook, said they have taken an important step toward brain reading in an academic journal published on Nature. The researchers created an algorithm to “decode a small set of full, spoken words and phrases from brain activity in real-time.”

This algorithm was tried on some people who are having brain surgery for epilepsy. Facebook noted that working with brain surgery patients is definitely not the best approach for the research. Therefore, Facebook’s Reality Labs, which conducts research on AR and VR technologies, is trying out other methods including monitoring oxygen levels in the brain with a “portable, wearable device made from consumer-grade parts.”

Facebook said oxygen monitoring is “currently bulky, slow and unreliable,” but the company still hopes to integrate such technologies into its VR headsets and future AR glasses.

“While measuring oxygenation may never allow us to decode imagined sentences, being able to recognize even a handful of imagined commands, like ‘home,’ ‘select,’ and ‘delete,’ would provide entirely new ways of interacting with today’s VR systems — and tomorrow’s AR glasses,” said Facebook in a press statement.

“Thanks to the commercialization of optical technologies for smartphones and LiDAR, we think we can create small, convenient BCI devices that will let us measure neural signals closer to those we currently record with implanted electrodes.”

We currently know very little about Facebook’s planned AR glasses. Oculus chief scientist Michael Abrash said back in 2017 that the glasses were at least five to ten years away. The only thing relatable right now are the patents filed by Facebook with regards to the AR glasses.

Facebook is facing intense pressure from the public after a record-breaking $5 billion fine for violating user privacy. It might be worth a second thought before putting on one of these headsets that grants the social media giant direct access to your brain.

Acer Launches Predator XN253XQ G-Sync Gaming Display With 0.4ms Response Time

Acer officially lifted the veil off its latest gaming display, the Predator XN253QX. As one would expect of Acer’s new offering, the gaming display is packed with many features designed to enhance a user’s gameplay experience.

To start, the XN253QX features a 24.5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) panel with a super-high refresh rate of 240Hz. It’s also fitted with NVIDIA’s G-Sync module, meaning that the gaming display would pair very well with all of the GPU maker’s GeForce RTX Super and non-Super graphics cards.

What sets the XN253QX apart from the crowd is its incredibly fast response time of 0.4 seconds. Something that Acer claims allows gamers to achieve “amazingly accurate gameplay even in the fastest action scenes”.

The XN253QX also boasts a display panel with thin bezels and a 170 degrees viewing angle. Unfortunately, the monitor doesn’t look like it is able to swivel completely into a portrait mode. On the bright side, it does come with a built-in stand that is also height-adjustable.

Ports-wise, you’re looking at a HDMI 1.4 port and a DisplayPort 1.2 ports around the back of the monitor. Along with four USB 3.0 ports built into it. Oh, and there’s also dual 2W speakers built into the display as well.

The Acer Predator XN253QX will retail at an SRP of US$499 (~RM2066). At the time of writing, Acer Malaysia did not announce a local availability or price.

Microsoft Mulls Over Launching “Cloud Recovery” Option For Windows 10 In 2020

Going through the process of restoring your Windows PC back to its default state is often a tedious process. However, a recent discovery suggests that Microsoft is reportedly working on a “cloud recovery” option for Windows 10 customers.

The new “feature” was discovered by PCMag via a leaked version of Windows Insider. In essence, the cloud recovery option would give Windows 10 users the option of relying on a cloud download to reset their PC. Instead of the earlier-mentioned method.

Having a cloud download option isn’t just a matter of keeping up with the times. By providing Windows 10 users with the cloud-based system restore, it effectively saves the user a lot of time. More importantly, with the feature now up in the clouds, it can simply download the latest version of Windows 10. Thus keeping a user’s system up to date, and foregoing the typical steps of manually updating the OS post-installation.

There are, naturally, some drawbacks to the feature. Performing a system recovery via the cloud means having a stable and consistent connection to the internet. Also, downloading from the cloud would be useless, especially if your computer system happens to be in some really critical condition.

There’s also the need for Microsoft’s hardware partners to work with the brand by ensuring that the necessary drivers are made available within each and every notebook and desktop system running on Windows 10. But that’s not a difficult task, given Microsoft’s reach throughout the PC industry.

At the time of writing, Microsoft did not specify when the feature will be made available.

Apple is Regularly Listening to Your Private Siri Conversations: Report

After instances recorded of both Amazon and Google, Apple has come under review after a whistleblower pointed out that it’s contractors regularly hear Siri recordings. The report came out in The Guardian although the whistleblower was kept under the condition of anonymity. According to the reports, contractors at Apple regularly hear recordings from its Apple devices which includes couples making love and even drug deals, etc.

When asked, Apple stated that it does send out recordings to its contractors to carry out the process of grading where they are tasked with grading the recordings on several factors including if the recordings were made accidentally or deliberate based on if Apple’s AI-based voice assistant Siri was summoned or not. It also grades the response of Siri when a user asks or commands to do something and grades the appropriateness of the resolution provided.

Furthermore, the report adds that since Apple has a series of devices with Siri such as Apple Watch, HomePod, iPhones, iPad, iPad Pros, etc, Apple Watch have been titled as one of the most frequency sources of mistaken recordings which is similar for Apple HomePod as well although the probability of mistaken recordings are comparatively higher in terms of Apple Watch when compared to other devices.

Siri collects recordings maxing at 30 seconds upon accidental trigger which is then routed to these Apple contractors along with details such as app data, contact details, location, etc. Apple maintains that only a small portion of the recordings are sent for grading on a globe scale. Grading enables the AI-based Siri to understand where and how the Siri should be improved and how better it can recognize the command made, etc.

As per Tom’s Guide, the Siri recordings can be varied from a conversation between doctors and patients, sexual encounters, business deals, and even criminal dealings such as drug deals. The Guardian quoted that Apple doesn’t use the data obtained from Siri to tie it with other Apple services. It is also not that easy to link two or more recordings coming from any individual as there’s no identifier or specific name associated with the recordings.

Hobbs & Shaw/Fast & Furious Writer Promises Deckard Shaw Will Pay For Han’s Death

Perhaps the weirdest aspect of The Fate of the Furious (AKA Fast & Furious 8) was the fact that Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) was suddenly brought in as one of the good guys, cracking jokes with The Rock and gaining the respect of the Toretto family. While it was fun to see the dynamic between Shaw and the rest of the gang, it made no sense from a storytelling perspective given that in the post-credits scene of Fast & Furious 6we see him murder Han (Sung Kang) in cold blood. As established in the fourth, fifth and sixth movie, Han is one of Dominic Toretto’s closest friends. On top of that, Deckard Shaw spent the entire seventh movie trying to kill the good guys. The whole idea of Luke Hobbs (The Rock) and Deckard Shaw working together in Hobbs & Shaw felt a little weird.

However, long-time Fast & Furious writer claims that it’s all part of their bigger plan. In an interview with EW, Chris Morgan mentioned that they’re building towards a payoff for that storyline.

“I love ‘justice for Han.’ Sung Kang is a great friend, and Han is a character that I adore. I would say that the super-arc for Deckard Shaw is going to be one of the most interesting, cool, rewarding character arcs in the franchise. Justice for Han is owed. It’s something we have discussed for a very long time and want to give the right due to. I think the audience will be satisfied and should know it’s coming.

There’s a line in Hobbs & Shaw that is right before the battle in Samoa where Shaw says to his sister, ‘There’s things I’ve done that I have to make amends for.’ That line was specifically written and put in there just to let everyone know that he is talking about Han — it is on his mind. It tortures him, and he’s going to get to it.”

Hobbs & Shaw

Having watched Hobbs & Shaw (review will be out tonight), I can concur that that line is indeed in the movie. So perhaps they are planting the seeds for a (hopefully) emotional payoff and not just sweep it under the rug with a couple of quick and funny one-liners.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is currently screening in Malaysian cinemas.

Working Through Security Issues on Cryptocurrency Mining

Ever since the cryptocurrency industry gained the kind of mainstream attention that it has right now, the issue of security has always been a sticking point.

In more ways than one, those who are concerned about the security of crypto assets actually do have every right to be. Hacks on exchanges and other asset custodians are rampant, and it always seems like new reports of asset losses are being released on a weekly basis.

This year alone, it was estimated that the cryptocurrency industry would lose about $1.2 billion to hackers, while a separate report showed that up to $500 million in illegal Bitcoin had been spent this year already.

Of course, this isn’t especially surprising. Just as it is with pretty much every technological concept, cryptocurrencies have the propensity to be tampered with, and the security of all these asset custodians and their platforms might not always be up to standard.

The same goes for mining. Anyone who engages in the act of cryptocurrency mining will be able to testify to the fact that mining pools aren’t always safe. Malicious hackers could always get into the security infrastructure of these mining pools and cause untold damage, and it is important that pool operators keep their systems prepared for any eventuality.

crypto

However, the problem that a lot of people currently witness is that security isn’t always a given. It is essential that pool operators and mining facility managers keep their security systems up to code at all times, and there really is no allowance for errors.

This is what CryptoUniverse currently understands, and they perfectly prepare for any eventualities.

As an operator of a mining facility, CryptoUniverse has propelled itself to the forefront of the mining industry. However, apart from the seamless experience and ease of mining that they provide, one aspect that they’ve been able to improve on is in the aspect of security.

CryptoUniverse currently has about $700,000 in share capital, and in addition to that, the company bears full financial responsibility. CryptoUniverse owns the land and the buildings, which makes it independent from tenants and also forms a valuable part of its assets.

However, their commitment to ensuring the security of their users’ funds goes way beyond the steps that they’ve taken to provide insurance.

With these guys, you get full cover.

Fraud and Hack Protection

The issue of security, as stated earlier, is one that has always plagued the global cryptocurrency industry since the onset. However, CryptoUniverse brings some sense of safety, thanks to the implementation of state of the art security infrastructure.

To get things started, the company operates a top of the line firewall that helps prevent unwanted access from the outside.

With CryptoUniverse, you can rest assured of safety from hacker attacks DDoS threats, and much more. The company’s servers are audited on a monthly basis, so they ensure that they stay on top of any prospective issues.

CryptoUniverse also maintains a unified monitoring and security system, as well as a duplicate alert system. Their security and IT experts are on duty round the clock, and with their level of expertise, they see to it that threats are combated in real-time.

In addition to that, the company also has a very reliable policy for processing transactions, thanks to the presence of an automated algorithm.

Information Storage

Information storage has been found to be one of the most popular leakages through which hackers and nefarious people steal crypto assets. However, CryptoUniverse goes on to store encrypted private keys and confidential data on cold storage.

Cold wallets have been found to be much more secure than the traditional hot wallets, which are employed by Bitcoin wallets, cryptocurrency exchanges, and other asset custodians. With CryptoUniverse, whenever a person tries to withdraw money, the system initiates a behavioral analysis procedure, and each transaction is put through a manual audit process.

The truth is that these extensive security features increase the time taken for transactions to be completed. However, given the level of protection that it provides, longer transaction processing times is a bit of an acceptable trade-off.

For proof of its effectiveness, CryptoUniverse has not had a single disputable situation as regards funds withdrawals ever. The track record definitely shows a lot of promise.

So, as things stand, it is possible for a company within the mining industry to achieve sweeping, top of the line security. CryptoUniverse is championing that course, and they’re doing it in a spectacular way.

Unknown Leaker Leaks Alleged Samsung Galaxy Note10 Plus And iPhone XR 2019 Online

As the launch date of the Samsung Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ draws ever closer, it’s only natural that leaks surrounding the phone begin to pick up in frequency. On this occasion, an unknown leaker not only leaked a complete model of the Note10+, but also what appears to be Apple’s new iPhone.

The purported images were first posted by serial leakster Ice universe (@UniverseIce). At a glance, the photos seem to only show Samsung’s upcoming plus-sized flagship. However, upon closer inspection of the phone’s reflection, you can actually see the alleged iPhone model and its camera module.

Ice Universe believes this iPhone to be Apple’s 2019 model of the iPhone XR; the phone is obviously being masked by a developer’s casing, but the cutout section on the cover is made where Apple’s logo is typically located. Further, the main camera module appears identical to concept renders. Suggesting that a dual-camera system will be built within a new square-like module.

As interesting as this is, many netizens have expressed scepticism and doubt over the Note10+ itself. One particular Twitter user has suggested that the image is doctored, and understandably so; while the phone’s display seems wrapped in the ubiquitous plastic sheet, the two cutouts at the top are not aligned or symmetrical.

As for the alleged iPhone, a closer look at the camera module shows some image warping, which also lends further doubt over the authenticity of these images.

While we won’t be getting any official information over the new iPhone anytime soon, we can at least take solace in the fact that we’ll all be getting our answer about the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ next week. So, until then, do take this news with large pinch of salt.

China Publishes New Rankings of 37 Crypto Projects

China Publishes New Rankings of 37 Crypto Projects

China’s Center for Information and Industry Development has published its latest crypto rankings. Thirty-seven projects have been evaluated and ranked overall as well as in three separate categories. Some favorites have changed and two projects have been added to the previous list of projects ranked.

The 13th Update of Crypto Rankings

The Center for Information and Industry Development (CCID), under China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, released the 13th update of its crypto project rankings Tuesday. The total number of projects ranked has grown to 37, with two projects added since the last rankings in May.

In addition to the overall ranking, the CCID evaluated all 37 projects based on their basic technology, applicability, and creativity. EOS remains at the top of the overall ranking, followed by Ethereum and then TRON. The center started ranking TRON in February, debuting it at number two overall. However, in the latest ranking, TRON dropped to third place, replaced by Ethereum. BTC now ranks 11th, up one place from May. BCH has also improved, currently occupying the 26th spot overall, up from the 29th place previously.

China Publishes New Rankings of 37 Crypto Projects

Two Projects Added

Two other public chains have been added to the previous list of projects ranked — Cosmos and Zilliqa. The former is “an ecosystem of blockchains that can scale and interoperate with each other,” the project’s website details. “Before Cosmos, blockchains were siloed and unable to communicate with each other. They were hard to build and could only handle a small amount of transactions per second. Cosmos solves these problems with a new technical vision.” Cosmos debuts at number 10 in the overall CCID ranking, just below STEEM and above Bitcoin.

The latter proposes “Transaction sharding to improve transaction performance,” the CCID described. “In addition, Zilliqa uses the new smart contract language Scilla to prevent security vulnerabilities that often occur in Solidity, making it easier to perform formal verification.” This project debuts at number 24 in the CCID overall ranking, just below Stratis and above Tezos.

Evaluation Model

The CCID explained Tuesday that the evaluation model used has not changed and the projects are still being evaluated overall as well as in three other areas: Basic Technology, Applicability and Creativity.

The first sub-index, Basic Technology, mainly evaluates the technical realization level of the public chain, the center detailed, adding that it mainly inspects areas such as function, performance, safety and decentralization of the public chain. This sub-index accounts for 65% of the total index. “The average of the overall underlying technology index has slightly decreased from the previous period,” the CCID revealed.

The second sub-index, Applicability, mainly evaluates the comprehensive level of public chain support for practical applications, the center described, adding that this sub-index accounts for 20% of the total index. Four key aspects are examined for this assessment: “node deployment, wallet application, development support and application implementation.” The center noted that “Compared with the previous list, the top five of the applied indicators list did not change.”

China Publishes New Rankings of 37 Crypto Projects

The third sub-index, Creativity, mainly examines the continuous innovation of the public chain. According to the center, for this index, the projects were evaluated based on factors such as the number of developers, how recently and often the code is updated, and which other projects have influenced the code. This sub-index accounts for 15% of the total index.

How China Started Crypto Rankings

The CCID describes itself as “a first-class scientific research institution directly under the administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.”

The first crypto ranking was published in May last year. A week before its release, on May 11, the center held a symposium on public blockchain technology assessment in Beijing and unveiled the latest progress of the crypto project assessment work carried out by the CCID (Qingdao) blockchain research institute, an entity established by the center. It added that the crypto ranking and evaluation work was done in collaboration with multiple parties such as the CCID think tank and the China Software Evaluation Center. “The result of this assessment will allow the CCID group to provide better technical consulting services for government agencies, business enterprises, research institutes, and technology developers,” the center clarified.

China Publishes New Rankings of 37 Crypto Projects

When the first ranking was unveiled to the public, Quartz wrote: “Today (May 17), the China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), a research unit under the country’s industrial ministry, officially launched its monthly ratings index on 28 crypto coins and the blockchains behind them.” The publication elaborated, “The CCID announced the initiative last week, citing the lack of an independent analysis of crypto and blockchain as a guide for governments, enterprises, and research institutes around the world.”

Recent Bullish Signs From China

There have been some positive developments out of China lately regarding cryptocurrency. According to local media, Hangzhou Internet Court has recognized bitcoin as a commodity in what the publication described as the first case of bitcoin property infringement dispute. “On July 18, this court confirmed the ‘virtual property’ attribute of bitcoin, which is the first time that Chinese courts have determined the virtual property attribute of digital currencies,” according to the news outlet.

In addition, Bank of China, one of the largest state-owned commercial banks in the country, published an infographic on July 26 about bitcoin, how it works, and why the price is going up. The cryptosphere views this move as bullish.

Russo Brothers Discuss How the Future of the MCU Will Be After Snap/Blip

For the longest time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) followed a very simple timeline. The year in which each film is set in corresponds to the film’s release date, discounting prequels — Iron Man is set in 2008, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set in 2014. However, all of that got a lot more complicated thanks to Avengers: Endgame. The 22nd entry of the MCU is largely set 5 years after Thanos’ snap in Infinity War.

Many fans wondered how this would affect the universe going forward? Would the MCU address the repercussions of the lost five years? For example, husbands and wives would’ve gotten dusted only to reappear five years later and find that their spouses had already moved on in life. On the commentary track of Avengers: Endgame (via ComicBook.com), directors the Russo brothers and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discuss the complexity of the timeline and if Marvel would just ignore it going forward.

Anthony Russo said:

“The premise here is a very complicated premise, right? You know, bringing people back from five years ago is a messy proposition any way you look at it. Not even talking about the time travel complexities of it. You know, that’s something I know some people like to think about after watching the movie…”

To that McFeely added:

“It’s like if you were in a plane, what happens to that now when you come back?”

Anthony Russo then chimed in by wondering, as many have wondered, what happens to the people who’ve remarried in the five years time skip that took place? His brother Joe admitted that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have to be “really complicated.”

He said:

“Or you have kids. But that’s I think, one of the most compelling things about the movie, is doubling down at the end and not reversing it. So the Marvel Universe moving forward takes place five years in the future, and its a really complicated future.”

Here’s to hoping that the MCU actually explores the complexities of the snap/blip moving forward. However, if Spider-Man: Far From Home is any indication, the blip will be mentioned in a few jokey scenes before being swiftly swept under the rug.

Google Researchers Discovers Six Vulnerabilities On iOS; Could Have Been Sold For Millions of Dollars

Google recently published reports about new security vulnerabilities found on Apple’s iOS. In total, the search engine discovered a total of six security issues on Apple’s mobile operating system.

The security vulnerabilities, discovered by Google Project Zero researchers Natalie Silvanovich and Samuel Groß, are described as being “interactionless”. Meaning that they are able to execute themselves without any user interaction. Further, the researchers found out that the vulnerabilities could be exploited via the on-board iMessage client.

Of the six, four of them are reported to rely on the attacker sending malicious code via a message to an unpatched iPhone and it would run once the recipient opens the message. The remaining two vulnerabilities are based on a memory exploit.

These bugs are apparently worth millions of dollars, according to several bug bounty programs out there. The good news so far is that Apple has already patched five of the six bugs with the iOS 12.4 update that was released on 22 July.

ZDNet says that Apple still hasn’t resolved the sixth bug, and the fruit company is still keeping mum about any details surrounding it. On that note, we do recommend all iPhone users to update their devices to the latest iOS update in order to avoid becoming a victim of these vulnerabilities.

Canadian Apple Stores to offer free AR art installations in August

Apple Store AR art

Apple will soon begin hosting free augmented reality-powered art installations in its Canadian stores.

Starting August 10th, Apple Stores in Canada will feature three “AR[T]” sessions that customers can take part in: an interactive walk featuring works by renowned contemporary artists; an in-store Swift Playgrounds teaching session; and an AR art installation viewable in every Apple Store worldwide.

To create the AR programming, Apple teamed up with artists Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller and Pipilotti Rist.

Together, they’ve created an exhibit that users walk through AR versions of San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo and encounter the artists’ work. Each installation plays out somewhat differently. For example, Rist’s ‘International Liquid Finger Prayer’ bounces, taunts and sings as participants chase after a shimmering form, while ‘Through’ by Höller takes viewers through a portal into a perspective-less world, says Apple’

Meanwhile, Apple has also partnered with New York artist and educator Sarah Rothberg to produce a 90-minute AR[T] Swift Playgrounds teaching session.

Finally, Apple Store visitors can try out artist Nick Cave’s AR piece ‘Amass,’ which has them journeying through a constellation to collect positive energy-infused ‘Ikon Elements.’

Registration for the [AR]T events is now open on Apple’s website.

Xiaomi Among The First To Use MediaTek Helio G90 Series Chipset

MediaTek has announced the Helio G90 and G90T chipset. Naturally you’d wonder if any phone maker will be using them in their upcoming models. To that, only Xiaomi has announced that it will have a device with the new chipset coming this year.

The announcement was made by Manu Jain, Vice President of Xiaomi Global and Managing Director of Xiaomi India. And it came at the end of MediaTek’s announcement event of the Helio G90 and Helio G90T. But that’s also all he said on the subject, with no mention of what model it is, or when exactly it will be announced.

It’s interesting to see Xiaomi making an announcement like this. The last time we heard of a Xiaomi phone using a MediaTek chipset was the Redmi 6 back in 2018.

There are other brands who have committed to using MediaTek’s new chipset too, beyond Xiaomi. That said, TL Lee, Head of MediaTek’s Wireless Business Unit, said that the company is not authorised to disclose which brands they are or when their Helio G90-equipped devices will be announced.

Uber launches human trafficking awareness campaign in Canada

Uber and The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking (The Centre) have teamed up to help educate drivers and riders across Canada.

Specifically, the partnership will focus on the development of practical resources for drivers, general educational materials and the promotion of the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline.

Launched at the end of May, the hotline offers free 24/7 support in more than 200 languages to human trafficking victims Canada-wide. The hotline can be reached at 1-833-900-1010.

The Centre says driver education is important because perpetrators use a variety of means of transportaion, including ridesharing services like Uber. With proper instruction, The Centre hopes Uber drivers can identify human trafficking victims and act accordingly to assist them.

According to Statistics Canada, there were more than 1,200 police-reported incidents of human trafficking where it was the most serious violation (i.e. sex trafficking) between 2009 and 2016. Overall, the government agency says instances of human trafficking been rising steadily since 2010.

However, as The Centre notes, many human trafficking incidents go unreported for a number of reasons, most notably victims not coming forward out of fear of retaliation or distrust of authorities.

‘5G is not everything,’ Huawei Canada says as it expands other businesses

Just north of Richmond Hill, Ontario is the location of a nondescript winery Huawei Canada has partnered with to continue growing in Canada despite a looming ban decision.

The Willow Springs Winery partnership also includes Global UAV Technologies, Telitek, Hub6 and Arht Media. The agreement allows the winery to begin using smart technology to manage the vineyard, production of wine and tours.

On July 24th, the partners and the winery signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate and help explore new “smart agriculture” wireless technology applications.

For example, Global UAV would provide drones that would fly over and inspect the entire vineyard within 15 minutes and indicate problem areas that should be examined. The drone can capture images, which show plant health, how crops are doing and the vitality of the vineyard.

This type of technology, in theory, eliminates the nearly two hours that a farmer would take to walk through the entire vineyard.

The drones would also contain Huawei Canada’s artificial intelligence chips.

Telitek would provide high-precision sensors placed in the vineyard to measure temperature, humidity, wind, speed and air pressure. This gives the viticulturist real-time data so they can tailor the grape growing process.

Huawei Canada looks into growing enterprise business

During an interview at the winery, Chris Pereira, Huawei Canada’s director of public affairs, explained to MobileSyrup that the Shenzhen, China-based company isn’t only thinking about the future of 5G, but is also ensuring it maintains a focus on technology that could be used when the next network iteration comes to Canada.

This also means focusing on connecting rural Canadians and working on enterprise technology.

“Enterprise is a relatively small portion. It’s about 15 percent global revenue. Our strategic goal is to balance carrier, enterprise and consumer — so 33 percent each. [Enterprise] is a growth market,” Pereira said.

He explained that the partnership with Willow Springs is a “first time proof of concept” to show “what is possible in smart agriculture.”

Pereira added that the drones were currently functioning on 4G LTE networks, which given the area are likely supplied by either Bell or Telus.

He said that Huawei Canada intends to partner with drone companies to provide the chipset and that farmers could hire drone companies to help manage their fields.

Once the drones connect to 5G networks, Pereira explained that the speed and accuracy regarding receiving images could be improved.

At peak speeds in ideal conditions, 5G networks are expected to reach up to 20Gbps download speeds. This is roughly 20 times what’s possible with LTE-Advanced today.

The reality of this though, and something to remember, is that these speeds would be available where there is Millimeter-wave, or mmWave, an extremely high-frequency band that offers high data speeds but a has a short-range. And while it might sound ideal to have these speeds at a farm, most carriers would probably utilize mmWave in locations where there is population density like in heavily populated cities or even at big stadiums.

The high speeds will also lower the time it takes to begin accessing content from the network (otherwise known as latency) to about a millisecond.

“A drone is flying fast across a field and if you have high latency, so 4G right now, it’s flying along it may see trees ahead of it…or even birds…and it might crash into it,” Pereira said.

These chips, Pereira said, would work on any network, whether or not Huawei is banned.

5G isn’t everything for Huawei Canada, taking a different route

While Huawei continues its work in the country, the federal government is doing a review of 5G technologies in Canada and whether or not the China-based company should participate in providing equipment.

A decision could possibly come after the upcoming federal election.

5G networks are also not fully available in Canada yet and are expected to roll out in 2021.

Carriers have suggested that a delay in deciding on Huawei’s future could push back the rollout of 5G in Canada. In particular, Bell and Telus are partnered with Huawei to provide last-mile infrastructure.

A potential ban could cost the companies an estimated $1 billion CAD.

Despite an impending decision regarding 5G, it may seem that Huawei Canada is taking a different route and is, at the moment, focusing more of its time on building other areas of its business.

“First of all, 5G is not everything, but I would say that 5G is important to Huawei,” Pereira said. “5G is one of our goals, but we want to be number one in smartphones and enterprise as well. Huawei sets big goals.”

Pereira insisted that even if Huawei Canada was banned from providing 5G network equipment, it wouldn’t affect the company’s revenue.

“Right now, our revenue from 5G in Canada is zero…if we don’t do 5G it’s zero impact because we have zero revenue,” he said.

Pereira also noted that the company isn’t asking for “special treatment.”

“To address [potentially] being banned, we aren’t asking for special treatment, we are asking to be treated equally, so [with the] question of cybersecurity and 5G, there should be set standards,” he said.

And if the company was banned, Pereira reiterated what the company’s chairman Liang Hua has said, which is that “in the worst-case scenario that happens, then we would be dedicated to Canada [with other solutions].”

“Our revenue is not just 5G, we have enterprise solutions, the consumer business group, and none of that is under question in Canada,” he said.

It’s worth noting that in 2012, former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper announced that Huawei would be able to remain in Canada but could only provide the infrastructure that isn’t in the core of the carriers’ networks. The core is where the most vulnerable information resides.

Huawei Canada says it’s not overshadowing the government

Pereira said that the company’s roots began in rural and remote areas, and that’s where the focus is right now.

“When we started in China we didn’t start in big cities. We were in areas where there might not even be running water,” he said. “When we go to the far north, this is not a new initiative for Huawei, it’s going back to our traditional competitive strengths.”

Huawei Canada announced multiple partnerships with Ice Wireless, the first carrier to provide 4G LTE services to the town of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, and the second to connect more than 70 rural and remote Canadian communities by 2025.

The latter goal includes 20 communities in the Arctic, 50 in northeastern Quebec and more in unconnected parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The announcements came after Rural Economic Development Minister Bernadette Jordan revealed the ‘Connectivity Strategy,’ which includes connecting 100 percent of Canadians to high-speed internet by 2030.

When asked if Huawei Canada was trying to overshadow the government’s efforts, Pereira disagreed.

“I wouldn’t agree with that. [Huawei Canada, in 2017,] unveiled our latest vision and mission for Huawei, which is to bring digital to every person and organization,” he said.
