Here’s how hackers commandeered Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s account

Twitter

Late Friday afternoon, a group of hackers gained access to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s account and tweeted plugs for the group’s Discord server and a series of offensive messages to the account’s 4.2 million followers.

Within 15 minutes, Dorsey had regained control. The group, known as Chuckling Squad, was banned from Discord. The tweets were deleted. Things seemed to return to normal.

While Dorsey’s account may no longer be sharing offensive tweets, the ordeal stands as a reminder that even high-profile accounts can have serious vulnerabilities. And in this case, that vulnerability was with phone-based authentication.

According to The Verge, that’s how Chuckling Squad gained access to Dorsey’s account. Twitter’s text-to-tweet service, which is operated by the acquired service Cloudhopper, allows Twitter users to post tweets through SMS messages. If you add your phone number to your Twitter account, you can post tweets to your account by sending a message to a shortcode number.

The thing is, many people have their phone number connected to Twitter, either for security verification or simply because when you sign up for a Twitter account, it asks you to put in your phone number by default. (Users can switch to email if they prefer, but people tend to roll with the default option.)

All this means that control of a user’s phone number is enough to post tweets to their account. And in Dorsey’s case, it was a lot easier than you might think.

A Twitter statement about the hack notes that a “security oversight” by Dorsey’s mobile provider allowed the hackers to gain control. The type of attack employed by Chuckling Squad is usually known as ‘SIM hacking,’ and often involves tricking a carrier into assigning someone’s phone number to a new phone controlled by the hacker.

An old trick lets Chuckling Gang tweet from Dorsey’s account

According to The Verge, this isn’t a new technique, but it’s often used to steal Bitcoin or high-value Instagram handles. That said, anyone with a phone could be vulnerable to SIM hacking. With the prevalence of phone-based authentication techniques, SIM hacking is a favourite tool for malicious actors. You can protect yourself by adding a PIN code to your carrier account or by using a dummy phone number for online accounts. However, both options can be a lot of work for the average user.

Chuckling Squad, for example, has relied on this trick before. The group previously targeted online influencers. The Verge notes that the group seems to have a particular trick with U.S. carrier AT&T — which happens to be Dorsey’s provider as well — but it isn’t clear how they gained control of Dorsey’s number. AT&T didn’t respond to The Verge’s request for comment.

Unfortunately, these kinds of attacks go well beyond SIM hacking and Chuckling Squad. Dorsey was the target of a similar attack in 2016, which manipulated third-party plugins to send tweets to his account.

Fixing these issues wouldn’t be difficult for Twitter. For one, the company could move away from requiring phone numbers for security verification. Alternatively, it could make its text-to-tweet service more secure. But considering the company has now failed to secure the CEO’s account twice, it’s questionable if it will do anything at all.

Google Play Store listings will auto-play videos starting in September

Google Play Store video

Google Play is set to follow apps like YouTube and Facebook and include auto-playing videos.

According to Google Play Console Help, auto-playing videos will come to Play Store listings starting September 2019. You can find the details under the ‘Promo Video’ section on the ‘Graphic assets, screenshots & video’ page.

Google says that auto-playing videos on store listings will “help more users discover your content at a glance.”

Unfortunately, most people don’t like auto-playing videos, and for good reason. They can be quite annoying, especially when browsing websites and suddenly a video begins to play.

That said, if handled tastefully, the addition won’t be too egregious. For one, if videos play silently, like on YouTube, that will be more tolerable than if they auto-play with sound. Further, there should be an option to disable auto-playing videos, at the very least when using mobile data.

One interesting tidbit from Google’s help page is that the company wants to keep the Play Store ad-free. The Play Store leverages YouTube to host promo videos. Google has asked developers to demonetize promo videos so that when they auto-play, users see the promo for the app, not a YouTube ad.

Developers have until November 1st, 2019, to do this. Google Play won’t show promo videos with ads.

Alternatively, developers can upload a second, demonetized version of the video specifically for use with Google Play. It’s a small hassle, but it should help improve the overall experience for users.

Apple launches free screen repair program for Apple Watch Series 2 and 3

Apple Watch Series 3

If you’ve got an aluminum Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3, you may be eligible for a free repair if your watch screen cracks.

Apple launched a new screen replacement program for its smartwatch models after it determined a flaw in the Series 2 and Series 3 watches could, “under very rare circumstances,” form a crack along the rounded edge of the screen. The crack can start on one side and work its way around the edge of the screen.

The flaw only appears to affect the aluminum Series 2 and 3 Apple Watches, likely because the stainless steel models use sapphire glass, which is more durable.

Apple says that customers with an eligible Apple Watch model can have the screen replaced free of charge at an Apple retail store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if it exhibits this kind of crack. Additionally, affected customers can contact Apple for a mail-in repair.

Apple Watch crack diagram

The program includes all aluminum Series 2 and 3 Apple Watches, with a full list available on the company’s support site.

It covers Series 2 and 3 watches for three years after the first retail sale of the unit, or one year from the start date of the program, whichever is longer.

You can learn more about the repair program on Apple’s website.

A tradition since a few years ago, Google has unveiled the latest Google Doodle artwork for this year’s Merdeka Day. Once again, the search giant has chosen our national flower, Bunga Raya as the theme for the Doodle.

According to the artwork’s description, Google has also chosen to include the traditional songket embroidery as part of the Doodle’s design. The company has also published draft designs for the Doogle on its official website:

Prior to this year’s creation, Google has also used Bunga Raya as theme for Merdeka Day’s Doodle in 2012 and 2013. The winners of Doodle 4 Google in 2014 and 2017 have also included the flower which is scientifically known as hibiscus rosa-sinesis in their designs.

Alleged Sony Xperia 2 Images Leak Online; Could Be Announced During IFA 2019

IFA 2019 is set to kick off next week, and for companies like Sony, it’s when the brand usually announce something new. Now, as luck would have it, images of what looks to be a Sony Xperia smartphone have made its way to the internet, and word is that the phone in question is quite possibly the successor to Xperia 1, the Xperia 2.

The leaked images were discovered on the blog page, Xperia Blog. At a glance, the phone looks nearly identical to the current Xperia 1. And while the all-black theme makes it difficult to make out the rest of the phone’s other physical features, the one feature that does stand out is the camera’s position.

The main module clearly still uses a triple-camera main array, but unlike the Xperia 1, its been shifted to the side rather than locked in the middle of the upper part of the phone. Further, you can also see both the Sony and Xperia branding at the back of it.

Unfortunately, they’re not accompanied by information of any sort, not even about the hardware beneath the hood. Given its length, though, it’s likely that the phone will retain the 21:9 form factor first introduced with the Xperia 1. On another note, the likelihood that the phone will also ship out with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is very high.

In any case, we’ll just have to wait and see if the phone in question will indeed be making its way to Sony’s show floor at IFA 2019.

Google Researchers Discover Secret And Sustained Malicious Attack On iPhones

Google security researchers recently discovered a critical vulnerability found within the iPhone, where a collection of malicious websites visited thousands of times per week were secretly implanting software to steal users’ data for. Worse still, the researchers says that hackers were able to take advantage of the exploit of iPhone users for at least two years.

According to cybersecurity researcher and Project Zero member, Ian Beer, the attackers don’t need to choose their targets as any visitors will be vulnerable to the attack when they visit the website. If the phone is successfully compromised, it will install a monitoring implant discreetly into the victim’s iPhone.

Additionally, researchers were able to conclude that the exploit seems to affect iPhones running from iOS 10 to the most current iOS 12. The software was said to have sent contacts, images, live GPS location and other data to the hacker’s server through 60-second intervals.

The implant was also capable of stealing data from certain apps based on their own references. Even worse, it was discovered that the malicious software is capable of intercepting encrypted data from apps such as Whatsapp and Telegram and transfer it into their servers.

If the phone is restarted then the implant is rendered inactive until the device is exploited again when the user visits the malicious site. Nonetheless, sensitive information has already been snooped out of the phone from the first attack.

It should also be noted that the exploit allows attackers to gain root access to an iPhone which allows the implanting process to take place quietly. As Apple is not aware of the exploit, it was classified as a zero-day exploit.

Ultimately, Google’s researchers notified Apple of the vulnerabilities back on 1 February. Six days later, Apple released a security patch in iOS 12.1.4 update; far less days than the typical 90 days given to software developers. On that note, we recommend iPhone users keep their device as up to date as possible to minimize security risks.

3 Common Property Issues and How to Prevent Them

No matter how much time and energy you spend on decorating your home and creating a cozy and comfortable environment, issues can still arise within the structure of your property. Should any such problem occur, it’s important never to ignore the issue and seek treatment as soon as possible to return your property to a safe and happy place.

1. Faulty Electrics

Having a safe electrical installation in your home is paramount to safety, as faulty electrics can cause fires and other dangers such as electric shocks. Signs of faulty electrics in your home include:

  • A buzzing sound – electricity should run through your home smoothly and silently; therefore, any buzzing sound is a sign that there is a fault or frayed wires.
  • Flickering lights – this can be a sign of a number of electrical issues, or it may just be an issue with one particular light fitting or wire.
  • A burning smell – this sort of smell coming from any electrical outlet or appliance can be a sign of a bigger problem

Naturally, with any faulty electrical issue, you should call a professional electrician to deal with the problem. In terms of preventing the problem, you should ensure that you never overload plug sockets – such as through extension cords – and always maintain safe use of wires and cables, keeping away from sources of heat and water.

Property Issues

2. Blocked Drains

Plumbing issues and blocked drains are never fun for a property. Where blocked drains don’t exactly form a hazard to your everyday life, it can be very disruptive to the running of your household. Signs of a blocked drain include:

  • Slow drainage – you may notice that your toilet is suddenly very slow to flush completely, or your sink drainage is taking longer than usual
  • Gurgling sound – smooth, effective drains shouldn’t gurgle or make unusual noises
  • Foul odor – naturally, a blocked drain will produce an unpleasant odor due to the amount of backed-up waste

If you suspect you have a blocked drain or you need assistance with one, you should call a professional plumber who will be able to help you. Companies such as Pascoes offer same-day service so you can ensure that you get the issue sorted sooner rather than later.

To prevent blocked drains, ensure that items you are flushing down the toilet are able to be broken down – for example, never flush wet wipes or sanitary items – and try not to overload any drainage system.

3. Damp Issues

If your property has damp, this can cause long term damage not only to your property but to your health, too. Signs of damp in the home include:

  • Mold on walls – it may be hidden or very small, but you should watch out for signs of discoloration on walls.
  • A damp smell – this could be very slight or only in certain rooms where the damp may have taken effect.
  • Excessive condensation – this will manifest on windows and be very noticeable.

In most cases, damp can be treated through prevention and making changes within the home, but you can consult a professional to identify damp and offer guidance. To prevent damp, ensure that your home is well ventilated (such as drying clothes outside rather than putting on radiators) and that your home heating is working efficiently. You can also invest in damp-proof paint to treat minor problems of damp.

HONOR Introduces Band 5 During Merdeka Roadshow; Priced At RM149

HONOR announced its Band 5 wearable alongside the 9X and 9X Pro in China awhile back. It has since been been made available on our shores. The smartband is also currently on showcase at the HONOR 20 Pro Merdeka Roadshow at Sunway Pyramid, alongside the aforementioned phone.

To quickly recap, the Band 5 comes with a 0.95-inch AMOLED 240 x 120 display, and a 100mAh battery. The latter, the company claims, gives the smartband a battery life of 14 days. It also comes with activity tracking for 10 different sports, and a real-time heart monitor.

The signature feature of the Band 5, though, is the blood oxygon monitor. This works as port of the wearable’s sleep monitoring feature, as well as detecting fatigue. For example, the Band 5 will suggest that you take a break when it detects your blood oxigen level drops to below 90%.

Locally, the HONOR Band 5 is priced at RM149. HONOR Malaysia representatives have said that the NFC variant won’t make its way here, unfortunately.

Valve Will Reportedly Be Fighting EU Antitrust Charges Alone

Valve is pushing back against the European Union’s (EU) charges made against it. The charges allege that Valve practices regional pricing and geo-blocking, preventing its consumers from purchasing specific titles depending on their country of residence.

For context, both Valve and video game publishers Valve, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Focus Home, Koch Media and ZeniMax were charged by the EU Commission for geo-blocking practices back in 2017. Today, it is reported that the same five video game companies have agreed to settle with the EU, leaving Valve as the only one left to challenge the EU’s charges.

Initially, both Valve and the five publishers agreed on using geo-blocking on game activation keys in an effort prevent consumers in one EU country from buy cheaper versions of a game in another EU country, such as Estonia and Hungary. Unfortunately, that practice reportedly goes against the Digital Single Market rules, enforcing common pricing and availability for digital products across the EU market.

Under EU Anti-trust law, it is ruled out that companies who admit their wrongdoings in return will get a 10% cut of their fines. As for Valve, however, if the company loses the challenge, the EU Commission will instead impose a 10% of Valve’s annual revenue.

At the time of writing, Reuters had tried to reach out to both the game publishers and EU Commission for more information but did not receive any further comments. Bandai Namco said that they could not provide any information until the Commission decides on the charges.

Agorism and Bitcoin: Free People Don’t Ask Maxine Waters for Permission

Agorism and Bitcoin: Free People Don't Ask Maxine Waters for Permission

Anti-agorism Congressional Representative Maxine Waters still has misgivings about Facebook’s proposed Libra digital currency, even after meeting with Swiss government officials to discuss the tech last week. The sustained reservations echo the message of July’s open letter from the House of Representatives to Facebook, calling for a halt on Libra’s ongoing development. While many view regulation and careful legislative feet-dragging a troublesome necessity for crypto mainstreaming, agorists, anarchists, and other free marketeers see a critical problem: the tech is already here, and how we use it in non-violence is nobody else’s damn business.

Also Read: Mega Drug Pushers Johnson & Johnson Get Away While Peaceful Silk Road Is Destroyed

Intro to Agorism

Agorism is, quite simply, the free exchange of goods and services by individual, free market actors. News.bitcoin.com has previously reported on the philosophy, and this primer about Agorism and crypto is a good place to start for the agora-curious. Suffice to say that at its most basic form, agorism is the philosophy and practice of engaging in free market activity outside of the control or regulations of a state. Living one’s life in such a way, to such an extent as possible, that violent governments are ignored, counteracted, and rendered increasingly irrelevant. The word “agora” itself is a Greek term, meaning “open markets.” The hugely influential agorist activist, philosopher and author Samuel Edward Konkin III once said agorist counter-economics is:

The study or practice of all peaceful human action which is forbidden by the State.

Agorism and Bitcoin: Free People Don’t Ask Maxine Waters for Permission

The Problem With Regulation

One of the most misunderstood aspects of agorism, voluntaryism, and anarchism is the fact that chaotic violence and a lack of order are not what is being sought. Agorists want the same things any other sane person wants: better education, better healthcare, better opportunities, and more peace. What is being sought is logical order and voluntary interaction, governed not by sociopathic, economically inept politicians and religious beliefs like the “divine right to rule,” but by logic, science, and the natural reality of individual self-ownership. That is to say, each individual owns his or her own life and body, and by extension, the property legitimately acquired or created by that body and mind.

The regulation of cryptocurrencies by the state exists ostensibly to fight crime and terror. What is seen playing out in reality, however, is that the groups that are by far the largest financiers of terror and violence globally — governments — have labeled themselves “regulators,” and now stifle a technological revolution set to help free billions of people. Waters states, in her August, 25 official assessment of the meeting with Swiss officials:

While I appreciate the time that the Swiss government officials took to meet with us, my concerns remain with allowing a large tech company to create a privately controlled, alternative global currency. I look forward to continuing our Congressional delegation, examining these issues, money laundering, and other matters within the Committee’s jurisdiction.

It is interesting that the state Waters represents, the United States Federal Government, is the world’s leading money launderer, by most rational estimations. After all, what is the unlimited, systematic creation of debt for the benefit of an elite class, represented by pieces of paper and zeroes and ones in computers, but a gigantic scheme to launder financial power? Bitcoin presents a threat because these irresponsible economic practices are simply not possible within the protocol itself.

The United States Federal Government spends over $1.25 trillion on war, annually. There is an infestation of child porn users in the Pentagon and at NASA. The IRS pays people to spy on hardworking Americans, organizing letter threat campaigns to scare even law-abiding citizens into paying money they don’t owe. And these are the regulators “concerned” with crime?

Agorism and Bitcoin: Free People Don’t Ask Maxine Waters for Permission

The Biggest Roadblock for Inclusion of the Poor Is Government Regulation

Financial inclusion is a big buzz-phrase these days, especially with influential, mainstream-friendly projects like Libra. It sounds nice. Include the previously disconnected, unbanked, and impoverished in the exciting new “crypto revolution” where blockchain saves us all, ends world hunger, and wipes our asses for us on the way out. There’s just one problem: there’s no need for centralized regulators – only individual human action.

“Hey there, impoverished guy! Wanna get out of debt!? Just head on over to Facebook or Coinbase and create an account. Of course, you’ll have to wait a few weeks to a month for your passport photo to be …. what’s that? You don’t have a passport? Well, I’m sure that’s okay, just present some proof of resi … how’s that? You’re homeless? Oh. Well, not to worry. If you figure out how to pass the KYC/AML requirements, pretty soon you’ll be able to do business online, and send and receive crypto! Bye!”

A cheap smartphone and an internet connection. This is all that is currently needed to make and receive crypto through free trade. Private, P2P platforms like Local.bitcoin.com help make this possible. Introduce a little government, however, and everything becomes cumbersome, violent, and vexingly inconvenient and inhuman. Agorism says if it’s non-violent, trade it freely.

The Desperate IRS

Speaking of poor people, the IRS is understaffed and overworked. Currently flailing to finagle whatever paltry satoshi dust they can out of America’s pockets, over 46,000 of the agency’s employees were forced to work for free during the last government shutdown. Some of them got discouraged and decided not to go back to work at all. The agency has turned to fear-mongering letter campaigns and automation, sending out a series of AI-generated notices relating to supposed non-payment of crypto taxes. They’ve also sent out over 400,000 notices since February, 2018 about failure to report income which could result in the loss of one’s passport. Financial inclusion never sounded less inclusive.

Government Through the Lens of Agorism

“Free people don’t ask for permission.” The commonly repeated agorist bromide deserves fresh attention. In most people’s daily lives, it would be absurd to ask someone else for permission to do things like drive into town, go out for a pizza, or help a friend fix his car. Without payment to a small group of people calling themselves government, though, each of these activities can turn deadly.

When state agents force someone to halt and find they don’t have that special piece of plastic for driving, they can be kidnapped. Those who try to provide a service — say starting a pizza shop — are also not immune. Without the proper building permits and food service licenses (also costing a pretty penny, of course) an entrepreneur will be shut down, fined, and thrown in a cage if they don’t pay. Potentially killed, if they physically resist the kidnapping. Those who try to help a friend with auto repair might also be criminals, thanks to the protection of the state. In Sacramento County, CA and elsewhere, this is already the reality.

Agorism and Bitcoin: Free People Don’t Ask Maxine Waters for Permission

No Victim, No Crime

When someone’s neighbor smokes cannabis in their home, they are not violating the body or property of anyone. Going a few miles over the speed limit is not violent, either. Nor is selling tacos outside of a sporting event to willing customers. Nor is collecting rainwater. Neither is drinking raw milk. Generating one’s own electricity and not selling a surplus back to a political jurisdiction called a city is not a violent crime. Nor is refusing to pay taxes.

Critics of the agorist approach rightly are concerned that there must be some means by which to establish order in any given society. Anarchists, agorists, and voluntaryists agree. The prescribed methods are different. Where the Maxine Waters, Steven Mnuchins, and Donald Trumps of the world demand submission to their violence-based class system, agorists maintain we are all equal under the biological, metaphysical, immutable reality of individual self-ownership.

Decentralized rules can be set up for any group of property owners anywhere, based on these principles. As such, asking self-styled gods called politicians for permission becomes a laughable prospect, if the risk of disobedience were not so real. Yet, for some, freedom is well worth it, open letters and legislative scribbles from psychopaths be damned.

Vancouver-made Gears 5’s campaign has won me over to the franchise

Gears 5 squad

Despite my best efforts, I’ve never been able to get into Gears of War.

After playing through all of the first game and parts of the second, I’ve certainly developed a lot of respect for the beloved third-person shooter franchise, although it’s still never truly grabbed me. Instead, I’ve always gravitated towards Halo in terms of Xbox exclusive games.

That’s why I’m pleasantly surprised to find that Gears 5 — developed by Vancouver-based The Coalition — is really speaking to me. After extensive hands-on time with Acts II and III of the campaign, I’m not only excited to play the final product, but I’m also eager to go back and play the rest of the franchise.

Following the events of Gears of War 4, Corporal Kait Diaz begins to investigate her mysterious lineage while preparing for an incoming threat. Despite not knowing much about Kait outside of what was detailed in a helpful ‘Previously on Gears’ recap video, I quickly found myself intrigued by her story. Without giving anything away, the early events of Act II propel the plot forward with great momentum and got me emotionally invested in Kait’s struggle.

I’m all for deeply personal stories, and Kat’s journey of self-discovery so far seems very much in that vein. Meanwhile, teasing how her quest will dig into the origins of Locust alien race ensures that longtime fans of the series will get some new and juicy bits of lore to dig into.

Further, The Coalition has smartly weaved these narrative threads into Gears 5‘s moment-to-moment gameplay. Throughout the game, Kait will experience startling Locust-related visions. The unpredictability of when these appear — as well as how they may affect the gameplay — often kept me on my toes. More importantly, they served as a clever and engrossing way to illustrate Kait’s mental state, which further attached me to her character.

Gears 5 Kait close-up

“We knew it was important that, as she went on her journey, we did things to connect to her past and the way she was feeling inside,” says Gears 5 campaign design director Matt Searcy. “So you get a feeling of the weight of what she’s going through and not just what it means to her, but what it means to the story of Gears of War.”

Best of all, these story beats complement the heart of the Gears experience — the action. As you’d expect, those core mechanics are just as tight, responsive and fluid third-person shooting as you remember. Moreover, Gears 5 boasts several gameplay changes and new features that make combat even more dynamic and engaging.

The biggest addition to Gears 5‘s combat is Jack, the hovering robot that accompanied you in the original Gears trilogy. This time around, Jack plays a significant role in combat, rather than just being a background presence.

Gears 5 Kait and Jack

“Jack was an evolution of us looking at ways of extending the player’s abilities and exploring ways to play different strategies. But we [also] had this awesome character that hadn’t been around since Gears of War 3 had kind of been underused in the past games. He showed up and ripped open the door and then went invisible for a while,” says Searcy.

“We want Jack to feel like he’s part of the squad [and] your friend — he’s a character in the game even though he can’t talk. He’s very emotive. We wanted to make sure that as you play the game, you get more invested in him and he becomes part of your gameplay and part of the squad as a whole.”

So far, I’d say the team has more than succeeded on that front. All told, Jack truly feels like a natural extension of Kait herself. That’s because, in addition to zapping enemies, Jack can give Kait one of several abilities that support a variety of playstyles.

Gears 5 Kait, Del and Jack

One ability can give Kait a protective shell to shield her from some damage, which is extremely useful in a pinch. Alternatively, Jack can briefly turn an enemy against his allies, which can give you some much-needed breathing room and extra firepower. My favourite ability, though, was Cloak, which lets Kait turn invisible for a brief period. This ability has many uses, such as snagging a few unnoticed knife executions or escaping enemy fire when near death.

For even more tactical support, Jack can even go up ahead and retrieve weapons or ammo for you, which allows you to remain safe behind cover. I found this particularly useful when trying to hang back and pick off enemies with the Longshot sniper rifle.

You’ll be able to upgrade Jack using components that are found in the environment. That’s one of several reasons to explore the world of Gears 5, which you’ll want to do since The Coalition has created larger and more expansive Gears areas than ever before. To do that, you’ll need to use a skiff, which may seem like an odd inclusion to Gears, but is one that nonetheless makes a lot of sense.

Gears 5 skiff

“Because we’re doing everything in parallel, we were also working on Jack and abilities and his upgrade path. It was a natural fit to say, ‘well, now we can have cooler weapons, we have Jack [upgrade] components, we can have side objectives, and now we have this whole place to dump your exploration rewards into,’ says Searcy. “It was also a great fit for the story because we knew we wanted to send Kait off on a journey. The story’s going in that direction, the player goes off on a journey on the skiff and the world becomes bigger and vaster and has these epic spaces.”

Based on my time with the skiff, I can say that it handles well and adds an impressive sense of scale. Further, the side missions offered by the skiff serve to flesh out the world and create more variety in the gameplay. One side quest path has you investigating abandoned camps to figure out what happened to members of Kait’s uncle’s village.

On the other hand, you might help out someone who’s trapped at a water pumping facility and learn about her clan at the same time. These sidequests also reward you with components to upgrade Jack, as well as one-of-a-kind powerful Relic weapons.

Gears 5 ice area

After all of this, I haven’t even touched on Gears 5‘s robust lineup of multiplayer content. In addition to returning favourites like Versus and Horde, Gears 5 will feature new offerings like Map Builder and the three-player co-op Escape Mode. The majority of my preview time was focused on the campaign, but I recently spoke to Ryan Cleven, Gears 5‘s multiplayer design director, who went into depth on the team’s approach to the game’s online modes in that conversation.

As it stands, Gears 5 is looking like the ultimate package. If you’re like me and prefer single-player content, there looks to be a meaty, compelling campaign waiting for you. On the other hand, multiplayer fans will find a larger-than-ever lineup of both competitive and cooperative modes.

I’m eager to see how this all comes together when Gears 5 launches on Xbox One and PC on September 10th. Alternatively, those who have a $16.99 CAD/month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership will be able to download the game on September 6th.

Sony Alpha 6100 And Alpha 6600 Mirrorless Cameras Arriving In Malaysia This November

Sony is back with a new line up for their Alpha APS-C series mirrorless cameras with the flagship A6600 and the lower tier A6100. Design-wise, both cameras look identical, but Sony says both cameras were made for different situations and needs.

The A6600 features a 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor with 5-axis in-body stabilisation. The mirrorless body also sports the latest BIONZ X image processor with front-end LSI that is similar to Sony’s top-tier A9 and A7 series. For the record, those models are 1.8x faster than the A6500 in data processing speed.

Moving on, the A6600 also features super-fast autofocus (AF) that enables the camera to find the subject in just 0.02 seconds. Further, the camera has an ISO between 100 – 32000 and expandable up to 102400, while the Real-Time AF tracking and Real-Time Eye AF tracking features that debuted on the A6400 are also present.

The A6600 is also the first Alpha series camera to debut a 3.5mm audio jack, allowing videographers to monitor their recording sessions. The camera features a magnesium alloy design to provide protection from dust and moisture. Sony also upgraded the A6600 with the Z Battery that was first introduced in the full-frame camera, meaning the camera can shoot up to 710 shots on a single charge.

At the other end of the spectrum, the A6100 has a similar 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor but will be relying on lens stabilisation only. The Real-Time AF tracking feature is found in the camera but Eye AF for video recording will not be supported. The ISO ranges from 100 – 32000 and is expendable by up to 51200.

The A6100 also has a smaller battery compared to the A6600, and only capable of shooting 380 shots in a single charge. It is also important to note that the A6100 is also lacking the magnesium alloy protection that protects against dust and moisture.

Despite the differences, both cameras are capable of shooting in 4K in 30fps and shooting continuously at 11fps with 425 AF points available. A 180° tilt touch screen and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity can also be found on both cameras.

In addition to the mirrorless cameras, Sony is also launching two new lenses. The standard zoom E 16-55mm f/2.8 and the super-telephoto lens E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS. With the addition of both lenses, the E-mount family now features a total of 54 lenses to choose from.

Both the Sony A6100 and A6600 are slated for arrival in Malaysia this November. At the time of writing, Sony Malaysia did not specify local pricing for the cameras.
