Upcoming PS4 Games 2020: All the biggest games for this year and beyond

Sony’s family of PS4 consoles are set to have a fantastic 2020. If things go like many are expecting, this could be the final year of back-to-back blockbusters for the platform until the next generation is ushered in with the PS5 and Xbox Series X . If this turns out to be true, we’ll be very happy with The Last of Us Part 2, Death Stranding and Days Gone as swansongs for the 90+ million selling platform.

So, Trusted Reviews has compiled some of the very best upcoming games coming to PS4 and PS4 Pro in 2020. Be sure to let us know if we’ve missed any of your most-anticipated titles out!

Ghost of Tsushima

Release Date: July 17, 2020 

Developer: Sucker Punch 

Ghost of Tsushima is a really easy sell, as demonstrated by Sucker Punch’s game director Nate Fox: “Is there a game that you always wished someone would make, but they never did?”

Assassin’s Creed could’ve done it, Nioh certainly got close, but so far, no game has provided an open-world experience in feudal Japan, even though the setting should be all the way up there with exploring space or becoming a pirate.

One thing is clear, the makers of Infamous know how to design beautiful open worlds. There’s a lot of love for detail in the trailer, and  becoming a hero against the Mongol armies is likely going to teach you a thing or two about this part of Japan’s history, too.

Biomutant

Developer: Experiment 101

Release Date: 2020

This open-world action-adventure seems to be combining the best elements of a world in the style of Monster Hunter and… Devil May Cry’s pistol and sword combat of all things.

In Biomutant, you take control of a raccoon-like creature that is trying to find a cure for its world, in which a mysterious poison turns all inhabitants into monsters. Body augmentations and a large number of weapons promise variety in combat, while the world with jungles, deserts, and snowy mountains looks too pretty not to explore.

Cyberpunk 2077

Developer: CD Projekt Red

Release Date: November 19, 2020

CD Projekt Red has teased the existence of Cyberpunk 2077, inspired by the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, for quite some time, before finally releasing a trailer during 2019’s E3.

Cyberpunk 2077 promises to be a hybrid of a first person shooter with an RPG, giving you multiple ways to complete missions through situational decision-making as well as plenty of ways to augment your character.

CD Projekt Red are by now renowned for detailed open worlds and a great narrative thanks to The Witcher series. To have them develop their own take on the world of tomorrow is an exciting prospect, although we may have to wait a good while yet.

Watch Dogs Legion

Developer: Ubisoft

Release Date: October 29, 2020

If you’re tired of hearing about Brexit all the time, we’ve got some bad news for you. Watch Dogs Legion takes us to a futuristic vision of London where the referendum has transformed the British capital into a dystopian hellscape dominated by emergent fascists and bleak authoritarian regime.

Legion allows you to take control of any and all characters across the open-world recruiting them to DedSec as a supporter of the resistance. Each operative will have distinctive perks, occupying one of three classes you can customise. However, lose them in battle and they’re gone forever. This sounds like a wonderful spin on the Watch Dogs formula, and we can’t wait to play more of it.

Marvel’s Avengers

Developer: Crystal Dynamics 

Release Date: September 4, 2020

Given the rampant success of Marvel’s cinematic universe, we’re surprised it’s taken the company this long to break into the gaming realm. However, it’s clear the company has taken it’s time, ensuring the iconic team’s first foray into the virtual medium is done right, and is far more than a generic licensed tie-in we’ve seen hundreds of times before.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics (who you may remember from the Tomb Raider trilogy), Marvel’s Avengers is a sprawling co-operative adventure which will see you play as Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Captain America, Thor and Miss Marvel. Each of these heroes has their own slate of abilities, enhanced by a sprawling customisation system where you can change every little component, whether it’s a belt buckle or an entire outfit.

Square Enix has confirmed Marvel’s Avengers will tell a completely original story and will be supported for years to come with new heroes, missions and unlockables for players to pursue. From what we’ve played, it feels like Marvel’s approach to something like Destiny or The Division, hoping players will invest a huge amount of time into its huge, inviting world.

Dying Light 2

Developer: Techland

Release Date: TBA 

The original Dying Light was a wonderful surprise, taking the underwhelming foundations established by Dead Island and transforming them into one of the generation’s best open-world adventures. Taking place across a city crawling with undead, you avoided them by running, jumping and climbing like a true athlete, using the environent to your advantage in order to survive.

It felt amazing play, only made better by additional expansions in the months that followed. The sequel aims to expand upon this with a larger, more ambitious setting which places player decisions at the forefront, ensuring each step, no matter how big or small, has consequences. Dying Light 2 has looks fantastic each and every time we’ve seen it here at Trusted Reviews, meaning it could easily be one of 2020’s biggest hits.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Developer: Traveller’s Tales

Release Date: October 20, 2020

We’ve always had a soft spot in our hearts for LEGO games, and that love goes even further with Star Wars. Combine the two and you’ve got a match made in heaven, one which Traveller’s Tales has milked to death with countless games in recent years. So, you’d assume the well has long run dry. Well, it turns out we were wrong, since The Skywalker Saga aims to complete reinvent LEGO games – bringing them into the modern generation with new visuals, mechanics and more.

The Skywalker Saga will feature all eight films – including the upcoming Rise of the Skywalker. Players can experience the events of each epic story while exploring a sprawling open world filled with collectibles. These aren’t simple ports of existing games, either. Each film has been recreated in a new gameplay engine complete with new mechanics and characters to play as. From the hands-off demo we saw at E3 2019, it’s really something special.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Developer: Ubisoft

Release Date: November 19, 2020

Following in the footsteps of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the next entry in Ubisoft’s open-world series will take players to The Viking Age scattered across Great Britain, Norway and Scandinavia. It’s poised to be a vast, beautiful and ambitious adventure which will build further upon the series’ growing adoption of RPG mechanics.

Much like Odyssey, you can choose between a male or female protagonist, and will have your very own settlement to grow and mould into your own virtual home throughout the game’s campaign. Chances are its occupants, atmosphere and morales will be influenced by your own decisions. Obviously, players can once again expect the franchises’ signature exploration, combat and massive sense of scope, pushed even further with next-gen consoles.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios

Release Date: Holiday 2020

Having already been released as a PS4 exclusive in Japan, Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be arriving on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC in the West later this year. That’s more platforms than any Yakuza launch before it, and teases a hugely exciting future for Sega’s cult franchise. It’s one we’ve been screaming about from the rooftops for years here at Trusted Reviews, and we can’t wait for its popularity to skyrocket.

For those unfamiliar, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a role-playing video game set in Yokohama, Japan. Unlike previous entries in the series, this is a turn-based affair featuring a new protagonist, new city and an abundance of new zany activities to partake in throughout the massive campaign. It’s still somewhat alien to see such an established PlayStation franchise make a splash on Xbox, but if it means even more people can enjoy it, who are we to complain.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Developer: Hardsuit Labs

Release Date: 2020

The original Bloodlines is a cult classic amongst RPG fans, with many having given up hope that a sequel would ever materialise. Well – this unexpected wish has come true, and the upcoming new entry is also on its way to next-gen consoles. Taking place in a rain-drenched Seattle, players will take on the role of a unique character who must solve a dark, unfolding mystery spread across the metropolis.

Players can once again expect a wide range of gameplay approaches, different factions to communicate with and a world that is constantly shaped and changed by the decisions you make. Here’s hoping this new installment reaches a much wider audience, given how beloved the original game was and still is amongst its fanbase.
