The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has an official promo video

For months, we’ve had to caveat increasingly real-looking leaks of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip with warnings that the phone remains a rumour until the company officially unveils it. Well, now we can be absolutely certain it’s coming, and coming this week.

During last night’s Oscars, Samsung dropped a 30-second teaser video for the phone. And while it doesn’t really add anything new, it’s nice to see everything we’ve been reported confirmed – especially the confirmation that we’ll see it officially unveiled at tomorrow’s Samsung Unpacked event.

While the video doesn’t tell us anything about internal specifications – lifestyle videos like this tend to be small on detail and big on new tricks – previous leaks suggest we’re at a long and thin handset with a resolution of 2636 x 1080 when opened.  Internals-wise, the handset will be powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB RAM and with 256GB of non-expandable storage.   

That it’s not using the latest and greatest Snapdragon 865 will be disappointing to some, but the 855 chip is still more than fast enough for most people’s needs, and compared to its main rival – the Motorola Razr – it still comes up looking very impressive. While the Razr’s specs put it in line with the £219 Realme 3 Pro, the Galaxy Flip Z is closer to the Galaxy S10 which still sells for over £600.

That said, the folding mechanism is bound to add a whole extra layer of cost. The Galaxy Fold sold for £1900, while the Motorola Razr starts at £99 per month on contract. No word on how much the Galaxy Z Flip will sell for yet, but we’d be surprised if you come away from the reveal thinking how reasonable the price is. All should be revealed tomorrow at Samsung’s Unpacked event, which kicks off in San Francisco, 7pm UK time…
