Oscars 2020 Winners: Parasite Wins Best Picture to Pull Off the Biggest Plot Twist in Oscar history
The 2020 Oscars / Academy Awards has wrapped up and there are a number of insane things to look into. So, of course, in the biggest moment of the night and arguably one of the biggest moments in Oscars history: Parasite won Best Picture! It is now officially the first South Korean film in history to win the Best Picture award at the Oscars. The win comes as a shock not because Parasite is underserving — I think most people consider it the best film of 2019 — but because not only is it absolutely rare that a non-English language film to win the Best Picture Oscar, but 1917 had all the momentum in the world heading into this year’s Academy Awards. The war film won Best Drama at the Golden Globes, it also won the biggest award at the PGAs and BAFTAs. What’s even crazier is that Bong Joon-Ho also won the Best Director category earlier in the night which already sent the internet into a frenzy. Very early on, Parasite triumphed in the Best Original Screenplay category, which is the only category a lot of us realistically saw Parasite winning. But of course, we hoped otherwise.
CONGRATULATIONS BONG JOON-Ho and Parasite!
Apart from that, my personal favourite film of the year, Joker won two awards — Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir).
