Android 10 update break your Galaxy S10? You’re not alone

An Android 10 update is causing Google Pay to stop working on numerous Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S9.

Users began reporting Google Pay contactless payments had stopped working on their S10, Note 10 and S9 phones after the update rolled out on the Samsung Europe forum earlier this week.

The issue occured when Trusted Reviews updated its office Galaxy S9, but we haven’t had a chance to test it on the newer S10 or Note 10 yet.

Sadly there doesn’t currently appear to be a confirmed cause or fix for the bug. Users have reported it recurring after manually removing and adding cards to the app and factory resetting their handsets.

Trusted Reviews has reached out to Samsung to check if it is aware of the issue and when a fix will be rolled out. We’ll update this article the moment we hear back.

Android 10 began rolling out to Galaxy S10 users in select regions last year. An update for older S9 users was issued earlier this week.

Android 10 is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. It launched alongside the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL in October last year. Despite being out for months it is still a rarity on most third party, non-made by Google handsets. Google hasn’t updated its developer dashboard to include Android 10 usage figures.

The delay is largely down to most non-Google phone’s custom Android skins. The skins sit on top of regular Android and are designed to tweak the OS’ UI and add a few custom features.

We’re generally not fans of most Android skins as they delay how quickly phones can receive software updates and, in the past, have caused issues like the new Galaxy phone bug.

It’s likely the Google Pay bug is a result of Android 10 software not playing nice with Samsung’s OneUI, as a result.
