Your next phone could shoot stunning 8K video like this

The Snapdragon 865 chip is capable of supporting 8K video capture – and Qualcomm has just shown us exactly what that looks like in a new clip.

One of the most impressive new features announced at the launch of the Snapdragon 865 was its incredible 8K video capture, and we can finally see what it looks like in reality.

The video embedded below was captured using the chip, and shows off stunning landscape scenes in Arizona. We’ve yet to see a phone toting the new chipset just yet, but we expect that the Xiaomi Mi 10 or the Sony Xperia 2 could be among the first (which is not to say that they will necessarily be capable of 8K video capture).

As announced at the launch event, 8K footage can be shot at 30fps or alternatively you can shoot 4K footage at 120fps – but these impressive stats are far from the only tricks the new chip has got up its sleeve. Qualcomm has also claimed that the processor will be capable of supporting 4K video recording while simultaneously capturing individual images of 64-megapixel quality. On top of that, it’s said to be capable of filming genuine slow-motion 720p footage at 960fps, without relying on frame interpolation.

We can’t wait to see mobile phone developers try and wring the very best out of the camera capabilities of this new chipset, but for the time being there are already very capable video-shooting devices out on the market. Our pick of the bunch is the iPhone 11 Pro (which runs on Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset), and we gave it the following praise in our review:

The quality of the video it produces is great – with plenty of detail and smoothness provided thanks to OIS. Flipping between the different lenses while you’re recording shows just how consistent the output is and is particularly impressive. Add on the fact that you can now perform a range of advanced edits directly in the phone itself, and the iPhone 11 Pro is the obvious phone of choice for vloggers and video lovers.
