PC Still The Preferred Platform For Devs; Followed By PS5 And Then Xbox Series X

When it comes to gaming, there are people who think that the PC is the best platform. Depending on what you’re looking for, this is undeniably true. And it looks like game devs think the same, according to the GDC State of the Game Industry 2020 survey.

The survey had 4000 game devs involved, getting their input on various topics for the upcoming GDC in March. When asked on which platforms they’ll be developing their next projects, 52% said they are working on something for PC. This makes the PC by far the most popular platform among developers.

This is followed by Mobile (39%), PlayStation 5 (23%), Nintendo Switch (19%), and Xbox Series X (17%), which is still being referred to as Project Scarlett in the survey. From this, it looks like the PS5 already has a leg up against the Xbox Series X in the next-gen console war. The latter is also lagging behind the Switch in popularity among devs.

Things are only a little different when devs are asked which platforms they’re most interested in. PC still leads the pack at 50%, followed by the PS5 at 38%, the Nintendo Switch with 37%, Mobile with 34%, and the Xbox Series X at 25%.

So what does this mean? The basic takeaway is that there are more upcoming games that can be found on PC than any other platform. But among consoles, it looks like the there are more devs working on PS5 games than there are those working on games for the Xbox Series X. Which is to be expected, if the current generation is any indication.
