MGM Studios Held Talks With Netflix And Apple About Media Acquisition

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios recently held preliminary talks with several internet streaming services regarding a possible media acquisition of the studio. The streaming services include Apple, Amazon, AT&T, Comcast, Disney, and of last but not least, Netflix.

There is no doubt that the acquisition of MGM by either one of these streaming services would be a huge boon, giving them access to MGM’s entire catalogue of films and TV shows. For context, MGM is the sole owner of the James Bond franchise, as well as the Rocky and Mad Max IPs. The studio is also responsible for the hit show, The Handmaid’s Tale, which is currently being aired on Hulu.

Love it or leave it, MGM’s willingness to seek out an acquisition with one of the streaming services is a sign of the times; online streaming has rapidly gained traction over the last several years, becoming the preferred medium of entertainment. It’s so lucrative that they – in this case, Apple, Amazon, and Netflix – are able to produce their own independent content, rather than solely depending on licensing for popular shows.

At the time of writing, neither MGM nor any of the streaming services have commented on the talks or potential deal.
