Nintendo Ending Wii Repair Services After March 2020

If you’ve got a Nintendo Wii that is in desperate need of repairs, you may want to to make getting the console fixed a priority. Nintendo recently announced that it will soon stop repairing the console this year.

According to the official announcement, Nintendo will cease taking repair request for Wii consoles with the model number RVL-001 after the 31 March 2020. Once that date has passed, Wii owners will have no choice but to seek out repair services via third-parties or if you’re feeling brave and confident enough. Engage in a little bit of self-repair.

The primary reason behind Nintendo’s decision is because parts and components necessary to repair the console are no longer in production. And replacement parts that do exist on the market are increasingly difficult to obtain.

To be clear, the end-of-service notice only applies to the console, and not its controllers and peripherals. Nintendo says that it will continue honour repair requests for these items, at least until it officially runs out of the necessary parts.

The Nintendo Wii first launched in 2006 and was met with critical and overwhelmingly positive fanfare. While lacking the graphical prowess of its industry brethren of the time – the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – the console defined itself with the Wii Remote, its iconic motion controller.
