Samsung Galaxy Tab S7: Big battery and Snapdragon 865 Plus chip 'leak'

Samsung is rumoured to launch the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7 Plus tablets this summer. Here is everything we know about the upcoming iPad Pro rival, including features, price and release date.

Big releases of new Android tablets are fairly rare these days, with Samsung being one of the few brands still pumping them out. Which is why we’re curious to see what it has in store with the Galaxy Tab S7.

As things are currently shaping up this could be a very high-powered slate, with features like a 120Hz refresh rate, high-end Snapdragon chip and a 5G option.

The Galaxy Tab S7 could see release alongside the Note 20 series

It is rumoured that Samsung is planning a big, online event on August 5 to introduce a whole heap of new tech. We’d expect the headline announcements to revolve around updates to brand’s phone line, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Samsung Galaxy Fold 2.

This event could also showcase the new tablet, however Samsung has, in previous years, revealed its flagship tablet shortly before the Note series.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Specs – Performance and battery improvements expected

While Apple usually kits out its high-end flagship tablets out with specs that are a little better than those in its phones, this isn’t always the cases with Samsung tablets. We’ve seen before it has used previous-gen chipsets inside the Galaxy Tab line. Rumours this year are suggesting the Galaxy Tab S7 is going to be likely one of the first tablets with the Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset. We haven’t even seen this chip on phones yet and it hasn’t even been officially announced by Qualcomm. If we do see this chip here it’s also likely we’ll see it power at least one version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series.

This news comes thanks to some leaked Geekbench scores for the tablet (via MySmartPrice) which show a score of 971 for single-core performance and 2984 in multi-core. That’s impressive performance that should make this a tablet focussed on productivity and gaming, rather than just binging on some Netflix.

Other spec information gleaned from the leak is that the tablet will have a base 8GB RAM and 7760mAh battery. The heavily-rumoured Plus model might improve this battery though, with a whopping 10090 mAh cell inside for, hopefully, some serious endurance.

Alongside word on the size of the battery, Sammobile has reported some news regarding the speed of charging. Even though Samsung has improved how fast its flagship phones juice up recently, those improvements don’t appear to be coming to the new duo of tablets. It looks like both the Tab 7 and Tab 7 Plus will ship with a 15w charger, which means we could be in for some long waits between full charges.

5G might be becoming more and common on phones, even those on the lower end of the market, yet 5G tablets are still quite rare. Samsung did release such a tablet earlier this year, and rumours suggest the Tab s7 Plus will come with a 5G version too. This would be ideal for steaming HDR video over data networks and for online gaming and game streaming.

Of course, we’d expect this to come with a generous price hike and be a separate option to the standard Wi-Fi only model. The same report also states the tablet will have WiFi 6, which isn’t surprising considering this is supported across the S20 series and is beginning to become a lot more common.

Galaxy Tab S7 Plus – Samsung could be going big this year

According to a report from 9to5Mac, Samsung is planning on directly taking on the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a 12.4-inch version of the Tab S7. This might be commonplace to find on an iPad, but we see very few Android tablets with displays larger than 10-inches. You can see the renders of the reported tablet below courtesy of @OnLeaks.

Little else is known about the Plus version, however it would be expected to pack a similar design and feature set to the smaller model on offer.

It also seems like the smaller of the two slates will pack an 11-inch display, which will put the two sizes nearly on-par with Apple’s iPad Pro line.

Galaxy Tab S7 Screen set to be 120Hz

We’ve seen fast refresh rate displays become commonplace on a whole range of Android smartphones throughout the last 12 months. Now it looks like we will start seeing the feature come to Android tablets.

Rumours suggest the Galaxy Tab S7 will finally match Apple’s ProMotion 120Hz tech and bring a much faster screen to its next flagship tablet. This rumour comes from Ice Universe, a fairly reputable source on all things Samsung. The tweet states that this feature would be coming to both sizes of the Tab S7.

These high-end Samsung Galaxy Tab devices have recently had excellent displays, boasting nice touches like OLED panels and proper HDR support.

The Galaxy Tab S7 will look very much like the Tab S6

According to OnLeaks, the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 will look very much like the outgoing Tab S6 model. That’s far from a bad thing, and we can see from the renders this tablet will have a small bezel around the display.

It also shows two rear cameras and a slight indent to house and charge the S Pen. We’d expect Samsung to once again include the S Pen with the tablet, and likely offer a keyboard folio case too.

While it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not the S Pen will indeed again be part of the bundle, the stylus itself has seemingly passed through the FCC so it looks like the release date won’t be too far off.

As with any product that hasn’t been officially announced, it is worth taking all these rumours with a pinch of salt until we hear direct confirmation from Samsung.
