Honor Play 4 Series Launched In China; Not All Variants Come With IR Temperature Sensor

Honor had recently launched their new Honor Play 4 series in China earlier today. As you may recall, the device – or specifically, one of the Play 4 Pro variants – is equipped with a unique feature that’s rarely found in smartphones today: an IR temperature sensor.

To start things off, we have the vanilla Honor Play 4. The phone features a 6.81-inch FHD+ IPS TFT LCD display. On the upper left corner of its screen is a punch-hole cutout housing a 16MP selfie camera, and the lock button on its right hand side also doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC which is paired with up to 8GB RAM and a storage capacity of 128GB. It is equipped with a 4,300mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging support, and also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Photography-wise, the Play 4 sports a quadruple camera setup on its back. This consists of a 64MP main sensor, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP depth and 2MP macro.

The Honor Play 4 Pro, on the other hand, strangely feels like a smartphone from a different series altogether. Some might even point out that the supposed high-end variant is “weaker” than the non-Pro version.

The device features a smaller 6.57-inch FHD+ IPS TFT LCD display, and a pill-shaped camera cutout on the upper left of its screen. Like the non-Pro variant, it also features a lock button with a built-in fingerprint sensor.

Under the hood is a Kirin 990 chipset, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Powering the Pro variant is a smaller 4,200mAh battery with 40W fast charging support.

It gets even weirder when it comes to its camera setup. On the back of the Play 4 Pro is a dual camera setup consisting of a 40MP main sensor and an 8MP telephoto with 3x zoom capability. Housed in the aforementioned camera cutout on its display are 32MP + 8MP front-facing cameras.

As mentioned earlier, the Pro variant will come in two separate configurations: one that features the IR temperature sensor, while the other is pretty much bog standard. As for the sensor itself, Honor claims that it has a measurement range of -20°C to 100°C.

The Honor Play 4 is priced at CNY1,799 (~RM1,080) for the 6GB + 128GB configuration, and CNY1,999 (~RM1,200) for the 8GB + 128GB. Meanwhile, the standard Honor Play 4 Pro will retail at CNY2,899 (~RM1,740), while the IR temperature sensor-equipped version is priced at CNY2,999 (~RM1,800).

Just in case you’re wondering, the new devices will ship with HMS and do not feature support for Google-based apps or services. Availability of the Honor Play 4 series outside of China is not known for now.
