Samsung Patent Describes Using AR Glasses For Navigation

Augmented reality (AR) is something that you see a lot in sci-fi, but not so much in real life yet. The ones that are currently in existence are mostly catered to the industrial field as well. But a Samsung patent describes a very mundane, everyday use for AR that’s actually very practical – navigation.

CNET reports that the Korean tech giant filed the patent in its home country. It basically describes the a pair of AR glasses working the way a head-up display (HUD) would in some cars. But rather than it being on the windscreen, it’s on your face instead. There’s also a camera that will work with the AR glasses.

The basic idea behind this is so that, rather than having to look at where a standard HUD is at to make use of it, you can be looking anywhere else and still get info you need. This means that you can be changing lanes and still see the direction you need to go at the same time.

Of course, as is the case with all patents, there’s no indication of if or when Samsung will actually be making this. And for AR glasses, this use case scenario is still quite out-there, even if it sounds very practical. And it’s not the first time the company filed for a patent for AR glasses either.
