PDRM Authorised By CAAM To Conduct Drone Operations During MCO

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have been authorised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to conduct extensive operations with Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) or drones. The move is to allow police forces to further enhance surveillance and enforcement during the second phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO) which started on 1 April 2020.

CAAM states that drone operations would be led by PDRM, in collaboration with the Malaysian Armed Forces and three private drone companies. Over 90 personnel from these organisations and 92 drones will be deployed nationwide, it added.

The government agency also advised that any UAS or drone intended operations must require CAAM authorisation. This is to ensure that it may not cause hazards to other airspace users or endanger public safety due to its extensive coverage.

“A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to notify all airspace users that a UAS or drone activity operation is done at a maximum 500ft above ground level. This NOTAM applies nationwide and is valid until April 14,” stated CAAM. A penalty will be imposed on those who commit offences by operating a UAS or drone without its authorisation.
