BAFTA 2020 Winners: 1917 Continues to Dominate
The 2020 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards has wrapped up and there are a number of things to dissect. For starters, 1917 bagged seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director (Sam Mendes). The World War I film has been dominating the awards season this year, having won the biggest prize at the Golden Globes and a few other awards shows as well. At this point, it’s all but guaranteed that 1917 will go on to clinch the Best Picture Oscar as well, though, a lot of us are also keeping our eyes peeled for a plot twist Parasite victory. At this year’s BAFTAs, Parasite won Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Original Screenplay (Bong Joon-Ho).
To be perfectly honest, the BAFTAs turned out to be a pretty predictable affair this year. Joaquin Phoenix once again received the Best Actor award for Joker — my God what an intoxicating performance! Brad Pitt won another Best Supporting Actor award this season for his work in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and so did Laura Dern for Marriage Story.
