The Moto G Stylus will be a cheap and cheerful Galaxy Note rival

If you thought Motorola had finished its budget line with the recently leaked Moto G8 and G8 Power, you were mistaken. Leaked shots of a Motorola-branded Note 10 rival were indeed real, but according to xda-developers’ sources, the specs are anything but Note 10 standard.

Instead, the Moto G Stylus (pictured above, via Evan Blass) will broadly match the upcoming Moto G8 Power. That means the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor we last saw powering the Moto G8 Plus backed by 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It’ll have a smaller battery at 4000mAh – which seems fair enough as the “Power” name always referred to stamina – but otherwise it’ll look pretty similar, right down to the holepunch camera and rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

Otherwise there are two main differences between the G8 Power and G Stylus. Firstly: cameras. The Moto G Stylus will have a triple camera array comprised of a 48MP f/1.7 main snapper, supported by a 16MP f/2.2 wide-angle ‘Action Cam” sensor and a 2MP f/2.2 macro lens.

Secondly, of course, there’s the presence of a stylus. This, as you might expect, is used to take notes and doodle, much like on Samsung’s popular Galaxy Note series. It does, however, have a couple of neat tricks up its sleeve. For one, when writing with it, you can use you finger as an eraser, avoiding the need to change any input settings.

Secondly, Motorola is really keen that you don’t lose the stylus and will record a time and location every time you remove it from the handset. The thinking is that consulting this log will make the missing stylus easier to track down if you later find it’s not docked in the bottom of the handset.

No price or release date for the Moto G Stylus yet, but with the middling Snapdragon 665 processor, it would be a big surprise if it were much more expensive than the Moto G8 Plus, which goes for £220. We’ll likely hear more at MWC 2020, which kicks off in Barcelona on February 24. Watch this space…
