2020 Golden Globes Winners: JOKER Wins Two Awards

The 2020 Golden Globes has just wrapped up and there are plenty of interesting aspects to discuss. For starters, Sem Mendes’ war film 1917 won the biggest award, ‘Best Motion Picture — Drama.’ The film wasn’t dominating conversations during the pre-awards season, unlike say Joker, Parasite or The Irishman, but this victory gives it major momentum heading into the Oscars, especially since it releases wide in cinemas this week. 1917 also bagged the ‘Best Director’ award (Sam Mendes), which comes as no surprise since Mendes used a one-shot technique to craft his film. All of it sounds ferociously exciting and I can’t wait to check out the film in glorious IMAX at the Malaysian press screening tomorrow.

What makes me really happy are the two awards won by Joker — ‘Best Actor – Drama’ (Joaquin Phoenix) and ‘Best Original Score’ (Hildur Guonadottir). These, to me at least, are no brainers. Phoenix delivered what can only be considered a heartbreaking performance of staggering genius as Arthur Fleck / Joker and Guonadottir produced easily the most soul gripping film album of the year. It would be a shame, though, not necessarily a surprise if these two don’t win their respective categories at the 2020 Academy Awards as well. If it were up to me, Joker would’ve won ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ too. The film is not only my favourite film of the year, but also topped the list of 25 Greatest Films of the Decade.

The biggest shame of this year’s Golden Globes is Knives Out being snubbed in the ‘Best Screenplay’ category. Rian Johnson penned a fabulously twisty screenplay packed with incredibly funny dialogue and smart commentary on American politics and class structure. However, we’re here to talk about those who actually received nominations and won. Look, the winner, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a really, really good film and you’ll never see me calling a Tarantino script anything less than wonderful. However, surely, Parasite should’ve won the award this time. I wonder if this is once again a case of Hollywood giving themselves a pat on their back. OUATIH is after all, a love letter to classic Hollywood.

Also, how on earth did Missing Link win ‘Best Animated Picture’? Yes, on the one hand, I’m happy that a film from Laika won the battle against Disney (which received 3 nominations in this category). I’m still slightly bummed that Kubo and the Two Strings lost to Zootopia a few years ago. That said, Missing Link is perhaps the second weakest of this year’s nominees. Toy Story 4 and How to Train Your Dragon 3 are far more deserving of the award.
