Capcom Files New Trademark For Dormant IPs; Dino Crisis And Darkstalkers Among Them

Following the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Capcom announced that it intends to bring its old IPs back. The company may be looking to fulfil that promise, if recent trademark registrations are of any indication.

On 29 November 2019, Capcom registered trademarks for a wide range of its IPs.  These include once big names like Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, Breath of Fire, and Captain Commando. They were all published on the same day as well, on 17 December 2019.

There’s no telling which of these IPs are first in line in getting a remake, in they’re indeed getting one. But according to CCN, Capcom already filed for a Dino Crisis trademark back in 2018. The two trademarks in such close proximity suggests that this is the IP that the publisher will bring back first. It also makes sense for the publisher to bring Dino Crisis back first, as it’s thematically similar to Resident Evil. This will allow it to ride off  of the success of the latter as well.

Before we all get too excited, it’s  important to note that all these re-registrations may just be a kind of renewal process for Capcom and its IPs. But with what the company said during its financial report in October, it’s hard to blame anyone for seeing a connection between the two events. And if any of them are getting remade, they’ll likely show up awhile after Resident Evil 3 remake to avoid competing with each other.
