This Is The Way AI Can Change The Way We Look At Health

Managing one’s health is complicated, to say the least. Doing so effectively takes a lot of research, which can be time-consuming and off-putting. But what if an app can help you with that? That’s the goal of Pulse by Prudential. And helping it do so, among other elements, is artificial intelligence (AI).

To understand the way it works, though, we have to first understand the concept of machine learning. Machine learning is a form of AI that helps people make sense of large amounts of data. It allows an AI to find possible correlations between pieces of information that may not immediately make sense to us.

This is undoubtedly useful where our health is concerned. There are countless different combinations of symptoms that could be indications of just as many health-related issues. An AI can help you make sense of your general state of health by comparing information regarding your medical history to a large medical knowledge base.

And this is where the features of the Pulse app comes in. The first one is called Healthcheck. Upon engaging the feature, the first thing it does is ask you a series of questions. Based on your answers, as well as information from national guidelines and standard medical practice, it provides you with an interactive visual representation of your general health assessment and relevant wellness advice.

The information you provided the app is strictly protected and meets Malaysian data protection standards. So you don’t have to worry about it getting in the hands of people who shouldn’t have it.

Following the Healthcheck is the Symptom Checker. Using this, you can tell the app about symptoms that you may be facing or are worried about. The app then asks you a series of other questions, predetermined by clinicians.

It then provides information about possible causes, relevant medical concerns and if the symptom entered requires medical attention or treatment. The app also reminds you that it is no substitute to an actual doctor, and that the information it gives you is not a medical diagnosis.

A third feature that makes use of a different AI is Dengue Alert. As the name suggests, it makes use of data to predict where the next dengue outbreak will take place three months in advance. This helps you avoid the affected areas when possible. When not, then at least you’ll know to take precautions against mosquitoes if you have to head to those locations.

Beyond these that make use of AI, there are three other features to be found on the Pulse app. One is called Online Consultation, which allows you to talk to a doctor via video or audio call from anywhere. While it’s an option that’s available to you via the app, you should meet with a doctor face to face for more serious medical conditions.

Following that is the Fitness Tracker. As you’d expect from a feature with such a name, this imports health data from other health apps and wearables that you use to have them displayed on Pulse. It also provides you with the nudge you may need to help you achieve your health goals.

Pulse by Prudential is a handy app to help you monitor and manage your own health, with the help of AI. It is now available for download on the Google Play Store.
