Avengers: Endgame Directors Discuss if Gamora is Still Alive

Avengers: Endgame spoilers ahead…

At the end of Avengers: Endgame we see Thor join Rocket and the rest of the Guardians on board their ship, dubbing the “team up” the Asgardians of the Galaxy. The scene is hilarious, but one that also teases an important plot. Right before Thor boards the ship, we see Star-Lord looking at his computer screen, scanning the far regions of the galaxy in search of Gamora. What’s interesting is that this isn’t the same Gamora he fell in love with, not exactly anyway (that Gamora died in Infinity War when Thanos sacrificed her for the Soul Stone), but a Gamora from an alternate timeline.

The question on a lot of people’s mind is: is she even still alive? After all, if Thanos version 2 and all of his army got dusted after Iron Man’s snap, wouldn’t Gamora version 2 get dusted too? In an interview with ComicBook.com, one of the directors of Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo, discussed Gamora’s fate.

“Quill’s searching for her at the end of the movie, is she alive, is she dead, we have no idea. Even if she is alive, it’s not the same Gamora. The way timelines work is you’ve gotten a different character. This is not the same person, she doesn’t have the same emotional memories, she doesn’t have the same relationship to him…as far as, they look like the same person but they don’t have the same experiences and the same emotional memories, it’s not the same person. No matter what, this would be a journey for him.”

Joe Russo saying “we have no idea” is going to rub a lot of fans the wrong way, understandably so. It can be frustrating when filmmakers make certain decisions without knowing where it’s going to lead. But what we need to remember is, the Russo brothers along with screenwriters Markus and McFeely were tasked to wrap up 10 years worth of longform storytelling, not think about what comes after. Now it’s up to the next batch of writers and directors to take the pieces (i.e missing Gamora and Sam Wilson as Captain America) and continue the stories.
