WeChat Pay Begins To Appear For Malaysian Users

It would appear that WeChat Pay is close to an official release for Malaysians. This is due to a number of users reporting that the feature has been appearing in their apps; as well as a report indicating that WeChat has been planning for this to happen in June 2018.

Readers in our forum have revealed that they have seen a Malaysia region option for WeChat Pay. Some believe that this is being released earlier for those who have previously activated the Chinese version of the wallet. That said, there is no proof that this is the case.

It’s also understood that WeChat has been planning to release its digital wallet in Malaysia since last year. The company partnered with Hong Leong Bank to bring the payment option to Malaysia, albeit only for visitors from China who already have activated the wallet in their home country.

Local newspaper Oriental Daily also reported that WeChat has been planning on launching the option this June. Although no particular date has been shared, it is believed that the it is set to appear just before the Raya holiday period. Presumably to allow users to use it for their holiday shopping.

We cannot independently confirm any of this information yet, but there has been enough supporting evidence for us to call this a ‘maybe’. All we can do is wait a few more days to see if WeChat comes through and rolls the wallet out to Malaysians.
