TM To Announce Its Take On Affordable Broadband At Higher Speed Within The Next Quarter

The company’s silence on this matter was rather deafening but the country’s main broadband service provider, Telekom Malaysia has finally provided a statement regarding the reduction of broadband price later this year. While the statement is rather short, it showed that TM will be cooperating with the government to comply with the directive.

Delivered to media late last night before it was published on the company’s official website earlier today, here is the statement:

“We wish to inform that Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has had several engagements in an ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Communications & Multimedia Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to reiterate its support of the Government’s aspiration regarding affordable broadband services at higher speed for the nation to increase its competitiveness; and on TM’s proposed initiatives to implement the same.

Further details on the initiatives will be announced by TM within the next quarter.”

In general, this is in line with what the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo has informed media earlier this week. According to the minister, the price reduction for broadband services in Malaysia is expected to take place by year-end which is made possible by the implementation of Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

It will be interesting to see what kind of initiatives that TM will reveal soon as this is not the first time that the company has encountered such request from the government. Back in 2017, TM has embarked on speed upgrade exercise for its customers as the result of the announcement made by previous Prime Minister, Najib Razak during the tabling of Budget 2017.

So, let’s see how TM going to thread the water this time around. Hopefully, it is not yet another “bawang” campaign.
