You Can Now Use The GoPro Hero 8 Black As A Webcam

GoPro has granted the Hero 8 Black action cam the ability to also act as a webcam. The company has done this via a new desktop utility software, alongside a beta firmware update for the action cam itself.

The company made the announcement on its own site, with the steps you need to take in order to make it happen. And you don’t need that many extra things to make it work either. Most of the needed items you should already have if you own a GoPro Hero 8 Black. The list of things include a USB-C cable, a microSD card and a microSD to SD adapter to install the firmware update, and a mount of your choice for the action cam.

In webcam mode, your footage will be in Full HD and 30fps by default. There’s the option to tone it down to 720p 30 fps, if you prefer. GoPro says the software is currently only available for macOS, with a Windows version still in the works.

In a way, this is good news for GoPro Hero 8 Black owners, who may suddenly have the need for a webcam because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, it’s possible to use the preceding action cam models as webcams. But as the company points out, you’ll not only need third-party software to make that work, but also a HDMI-to-USB converter, which isn’t as easy to obtain as a USB-C cable
