unifi TV App Now Works On Other Android TV Devices

Back in January, unifi has launched a new set-top box (STB) for IPTV service called unifi TV Plus. Since it is an Android TV-based device, the new box is also equipped with an equally new unifi TV app which has been listed on Google Play.

However, you would not able to run the app in its unmodified form on other Android TV devices up until earlier this month. Through an update dated 30 June 2020 that has bumped up the app to version 1.2.2, the unifi TV app now no longer exclusive to unifi TV Plus box.

In our testing, the app works flawlessly on an unmodified 2016 Xiaomi Mi Box and a Sony Android TV. Several users in the unifi TV section of Lowyat.NET Forums have also tested the app on another Sony Android TV, the newer Xiaomi Mi Box S and an NVIDIA Shield.

Just to make sure you noticed that the unifi TV Plus box shown on the picture above is not turned on as the unifi TV app on the screen actually came from the Mi Box.

It seems rather odd that unifi did not publicly highlight this update to users. However, a recent post from an admin on unifi’s Community forum seems to signal that the support for other Android TV devices is really part of unifi TV’s official plan and not an oversight or a mistake in programming:

It is interesting to see that unifi has this sudden change in policy, allowing its IPTV app to run on Android TV devices other than its own unifi TV Plus box. Furthermore, this update came just a few days after Astro kicks off its Android TV test.

Hence, we do wonder if unifi is planning something major for its IPTV service. Well, we will keep you posted once we have seen any signs of such move.
