Samsung Galaxy Note 20 vs Note 20 Ultra: What is the difference?

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 vs Note 20 Ultra – Samsung is all set to unveil its next Android devices at an Unpacked event on August 5, and we’re expecting the headline act to be the next-gen Samsung Galaxy Note 20.

As is always the case with big phone releases, a lot of the information and key details regarding the Note 20 have already leaked out. It seems, just like last year, that they’ll be two models. Rumours suggest a slightly paired-down Galaxy Note 20 and then a fancier, higher-priced Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

But what do we know about these devices so far?

Like the Plus model from 2019, it seems like the Note 20 Ultra is going to be the true flagship in Samsung’s line-up. Leaks suggest this will pack many features missing on the regular Note 20.

Key among these is a 120Hz display, just like the screens on the Samsung Galaxy S20 range. Leaked specs point to a 6.9-inch Super AMOLED 120Hz display adorning the Ultra, with curved sides and Gorilla Glass 7 for protection. The Note 20, on the other hand, feels a little more pedestrian, as it could include a standard 60Hz flat panel measuring in at 6.7-inches.

Resolutions are set to be different too, with the Note 20 Ultra boasting a QHD+ panel and the Note 20 lowering that to FHD+.

Inside both the phones it seems like Samsung is going to be sticking with the Exynos 990 in Europe, and switching to the Snapdragon 865 Plus in markets where you’ll normally find Qualcomm processors inside the brand’s phones such as the USA. The Note 20 Ultra is set to pack 12GB RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage, while the Note 12 lowers that to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. You might also miss out on expandable storage if you don’t plump for the Ultra.

Both phones are set to be DeX compatible. Both are expected to have 5G support, dual-SIM slots, WiFi 6 and an IP68 rating. Samsung is also said to be entering a partnership for Microsoft to push these two phones as key xCloud streaming devices.

In terms of cameras, it looks like neither will pack the 100x Space Zoom feature you’ll find on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. WinFuture reports the Note 20 Ultra will have a main 108MP camera, along with a 12MP ultra wide and 12MP optical 5x zoom. The Note 20 could also have three cameras, with the main being a 12MP and the zoom knocked down to 3x.

We learned from the same WinFuture leak that Samsung might be improving the S Pen this time round. This is one of the key selling points of the device, and it remains the biggest differentiator when comparing this to other Samsung and Android phones.

WinFuture reports that the Note 20 Ultra will get an improved S Pen, with 9ms latency as opposed to 26ms on the Note 20. This would lead to a smoother writing experience.

From the images seen in the above link, it looks like both devices will share the same basic DNA with a boxy look and come in, among others, a bronze hue (this seems to have been confirmed by the recently Z Flip 5G announcement). Big differences will be the larger camera module on the Ultra and the flat screen on the regular Note 20.

Samsung is holding an Unpacked event on August 5 and this is where we expect the duo of Note 20 devices to be revealed, alongside the Samsung Z Fold 2 and possibly a high-end Galaxy Tab S7 tablet and Galaxy Watch 3.

Pricing remains unclear, though it does feel like we might be seeing a bigger gulf between phones this year. Currently, the Note 10 Plus retails for £1099 and the Note 10 for £869. There’s also a Note 10 Lite for £529.
