Senior Minister Against RapidKL Decision To End Social Distancing Restrictions

Earlier today we reported that RapidKL had announced that it will end social distancing restrictions for its rail services, effective tomorrow on 10 June. However, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated during a media session today that he is against this decision.

The minister explained that the company had made this decision on their own accord, and did not consult with the government prior to this. RapidKL does not have the authority to alter the guidelines that were set by the government and should seek approval from the Ministry Of Health before making the public announcement, he added.

Ismail Sabri said that the government is aware that the company experienced a decrease in the number of passengers ever since the implementation of social distancing restrictions. This, in turn, resulted in increased costs to maintain its services, as well as suffering significant losses in revenue during the MCO and CMCO periods.

He added that the government is still discussing a feasible solution for all forms of public transportation at this time, and warned respective companies to not make decisions on their own terms without consulting with the government first regarding this matter.

RapidKL have yet to update their announcement, or provide a response to the minister’s statement.
