Samsung May Have An 8TB SATA SSD In The Pipeline

Samsung could be planning on launching a new SATA-based SSD with a storage capacity of 8TB. The discovery of the SSD was made by Tom’s Hardware, who found the listings of two Samsung 8709 QVO SSDs on Amazon.

Specifically, the page – which has since been taken down – initially named two devices by their SKU numbers, MZ-77Q8T0B/AM and MZ-77Q1T0B/AM. The former refers to the 8TB SSD and the latter the 1TB SSD. Price-wise, the 8TB version was listed at US$900 (~RM3825) and the 1TB variant at US$130 (~RM552), but there were no other specification details. However, it is currently being speculated that these 870 QVOs may simply just use Samsung’s QLC 3D V-NAND controller.

SSDs have come a long way in terms of their read and write speeds, but not so much with its storage capacity. Commercially, the largest capacity available on the current market is 2TB, but even that amount is slowly being dwarfed by the constantly growing size of many game titles today.

To provide some examples, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is already nearing the 200GB marker, while games like the 2016 reboot of DOOM easily takes 78GB of any storage medium.

The listing stated that the 8TB 870 QVO is slated for a 24 August availability, while the 1TB version will be available from 30 June onwards. At the time of writing, there has been no official word from Samsung or if it plans on releasing the 8TB variant locally.
