Apple May Revert iOS Name Back To iPhone OS

As we are getting nearer to the 2020 edition of Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), rumours that are related to the event have begun to pop up. Among the latest rumour that is getting huge traction at the moment is Apple’s intention to rename iOS.

If this cryptic tweet by serial leaker Jon Prosser is accurate, we might see iOS to be called iPhoneOS once again:

iPhoneOS was the original name that Apple has used for the operating system on the original iPhone back in 2007. The company then changed the name to iOS in 2010 when it launched the first-gen iPad which used the same operating system.

However, Apple has then announced the iPadOS at WWDC last year which was technically still derived from iOS but with several functionalities that are available only on iPad. Among them including Slide Over, Split View, and the desktop-like Home Screen.

If Apple do presses on with the rename, it is indeed an interesting move but not exactly surprising given the split in branding between iPhone and iPad’s operating system. Even though Jon didn’t provide any additional information in his tweet, WWDC is certainly among the best opportunity for Apple to announce this change and we shall see if that is really going to happen next week.
