iPhone SE 2 − Price, release date and all the biggest leaks
We haven’t heard about a rumoured iPhone SE 2 in a long time, however recent reports have suggested the device we expected to be called the iPhone 9 will actually simply be know as iPhone SE. Possibly iPhone SE 2 or iPhone SE 2020.
While it has the iPhone SE name, it will actually look very much like the iPhone 8. That means you’ve got a 4.7-inch display and TouchID rather than Face ID.
Read on for everything we’ve heard about the iPhone SE 2 over the past few years, and we’ll update this page if Apple does decide to announce a member of the SE family.
iPhone SE 2 release date – When could it come out?
The original iPhone SE was launched all the way back in March 2016, and a slew of recent reports, several sourced from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, point towards an early 2020 launch. 9to5Mac has also reported we could see the phone released on April 3.

iPhone SE 2 price – How much will it cost?
The original iPhone SE was available for just £379 at launch, which sounds scarcely believable next to today’s sky-high smartphone prices. Of course that was way back in 2016, when even the price of the year’s flagship handset (the iPhone 6S) was a mere £539.
These days the base model iPhone 11 will set you back by £729, while the top-spec iPhone 11 Pro Max costs more than double, at a maximum price of £1499. We’re confident that the price of the iPhone SE 2 will fall comfortably short of these considerable sums, likely making it the cheapest new iPhone around.
In October 2019, a TF Securities report from Kuo, which was seen by 9to5Mac, predicted that the iPhone SE 2 will start at $399 (~£320).
That seems surprisingly affordable, bearing in mind that it would be even less than the price of the original all those years ago; but take care to temper your enthusiasm if you live in the UK.
While the iPhone 11 starts at £729 in the UK, it only costs $699 in the US (which equates to roughly £545). UK customers have had to pay disproportionately high prices for some time, but the issue seems to be getting worse, meaning that means the iPhone SE 2 could actually be priced closer to the £450 mark when it reaches these shores.
iPhone SE 2 colours
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 2 will be only be available in three colours: red, silver and space grey.
That’s pretty underwhelming when you compare it to the six shades on offer for the iPhone 11 — but it’s at least an improvement on the original iPhone SE’s bland colour selection: silver, space grey, gold and rose gold.

iPhone SE 2 design and display
The iPhone SE had exactly the same looks as the iPhone 5S, which in turn was hardly distinguishable from the iPhone 4. Nikkei reports that the iPhone SE 2, however, is expected to look more like the iPhone 8 (pictured above) − and yes, that should mean we’ll see a comeback for the physical home button with integrated Touch ID.
It has been reported that Apple could be preparing two compact iPhones for release in 2020 − one with Touch ID and a physical home button, and one with Face ID and a notch − but we believe the former to be true of the iPhone SE reboot. The other handset sounds like more of a direct successor to the iPhone 8.
The body of the iPhone 8 measures 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm and features a 4.7-inch display. The original iPhone SE, by comparison has just a tiny 4-inch display, which seems quaint nowadays given the recent trend for enormous, unwieldy screens as large as seven inches.
The new design should manage to bridge the gap between a conveniently compact size, and an adequate screen size for modern apps.
There’s no word yet on the resolution of the iPhone SE 2’s screen, but we expect it to follow the example of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11, being equipped with an 720p LCD panel rather than a high-resolution OLED.

iPhone SE 2 specs and features
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the SE 2 will pack the same punchy A13 chipset as the 2019 iPhones. Essentially that means you’ll get a comparable performance even though it’s in a smaller and slightly more dated looking frame. Apparently it will pack 3GB of RAM, rather than 4GB, but due to iOS 13’s efficiency it should be able to handle multi-tasking just fine.
It’s expected to have just the one single rear camera sensor rather than a multi-camera set-up, and some sources have even claimed that it will see the return of the headphone jack to Apple’s handsets. We struggle to believe that, but it would be a boon if we didn’t have to use expensive wireless headphones or an adaptor would be very welcome.
