Facebook Introduces Messenger Rooms; Allows Up To 50 Video Call Participants

Facebook is introducing a new feature to its Messenger app that allows for video calls with up to 50 participants. The feature, called Messenger Rooms, enables users to create a video conference session directly from the social media platform or the Messenger app. The company previously released a standalone desktop application for the Messenger platform as well. 

On top of inviting friends or family to participate in video calls, the new feature also allow hosts to invite those who don’t own a Facebook account. Messenger Rooms sessions can be shared on Facebook through News Feed, Groups, and Events so it’s easier for others to drop by. 

For private sessions, hosts are able to choose who can see and join it. Additionally, room moderation controls such as reporting or removing participants and locking others from entering can be done while the group call is in session.

According to the social media giant, users can join in on Messenger Rooms video calls from their phone or computer, without the need of downloading anything in order to participate. Those on the Messenger app can enhance the session with AR effects, as well as new AI-powered features such as immersive 360-degree backgrounds and mood lighting.

Facebook states that Messenger Rooms is only rolling out in some countries within this week. The update will be expanded throughout the rest of the world in the coming weeks, they added.
