Emily Blunt Discusses Possibility of Edge of Tomorrow Sequel

It seems like the Edge of Tomorrow sequel is living out its own “live die repeat” cycle as uncertainties continue to shroud the project. Director Doug Liman is still attached to the follow-up, now called Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat, and there has been no confirmation thus far with regards to a production date. The first film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt was released in back in 2014 and was praised for its fresh mashup of the sci-fi genre with a Groundhog-Day-esque narrative. With its blend of humour, fearsome Mimics, and a whole lot of slicing and dicing from Rita Vrataski’s broadsword, Edge of Tomorrow was one of the most enjoyable highlights of 2014.

For the past six years, reports of a sequel began circulating as the director constantly assured the public that the embers of the project are very much alive. Early last year, Warner Bros. hired Matthew Robinson, who penned films such as Black Box and Dora and The Lost City of Gold, to work on the script for the sequel after the studio fell in love with his pitch. In October of 2019, Doug Liman announced that the script had already been finished. Recently, Emily Blunt spoke to IndieWire about Live Die Repeat and Repeat, stating that the gears have indeed been moving, but getting them to mesh together is a whole other story.

I think there’s an idea, that he says is great. And he says this guy [Matthew Robinson] came in and cracked the case. How the stars will all align for us to be able to do it. I don’t know. I hope they do.

The actress further commented on the tough filming process for the first film and her dedication to the role.

I absolutely adored it. It broke my body in half, but I’d be willing to do it again to work with those boys who I love. So let’s see.

But Blunt knows that it could all just be a pipe dream. She joked:

Tom and I are going to be 70 before we make another one It’s going to look a bit weird. We’ll have to do a real flashforward one…We’ll go full Irishman, it’ll be the Irishman version of Edge of Tomorrow. Who knows? I hope, I’m going to talk to Doug about it [at the A Quiet Place: Part II premiere].

I certainly hope this gets off the ground. Edge of Tomorrow was one of those high-energy sci-fi blasts that was a really fun time with the popcorn in hand. Besides, it also introduced Emily Blunt as a no-nonsense kick-a** female persona which really altered my perspective of the actress at that time.
