Rainbow Six Siege will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch
Ubisoft has confirmed that its hugely popular multiplayer shooter will be arriving on next-generation consoles in time for release.
Rainbow Six Siege has drawn in millions of players since it first launched back in December 2015, growing to accommodate new heroes, modes and mechanics as one of the biggest live-service games in the world.
It seems Ubisoft has no plans to stop this train, confirming to Windows Central that it will be arriving on PS5 and Xbox Series X in time for launch if everything goes to plan. Given that both consoles will support backwards compatibility, this doesn’t come as a huge surprise.
“Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles,” states game director Leroy Athanassof.
“What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.” Ubisoft is aware that not being on the new consoles in the opening weeks could risk breaking apart the audience, saying “we don’t want to break our community. So, we want people who buy the new system right away to play it with their friends.”

Cross-generational multiplayer will also be implemented, meaning both PS4 and PS5 players will be able to compete alongside each other without any problems. “That means if you play on the next PlayStation, you will be able to matchmake with the previous PlayStation.” Crossplay between PS4, Xbox One and PC hasn’t been confirmed, although the developer wants it to become a possibility moving forward alongside crossplatform progression.
Last week saw the introduction of Siege’s next major update – Operation Void Edge. It will add two new playable operators to the game in the form of Iana and Oryx. This will be accompanied with various other features and quality-of-life improvements, which we’ll know more about closer to the time.
With Rainbox Six Siege walking a path towards the next-gen consoles, we’re curious if other live-service titles such as For Honor and The Division 2 will do the same. We’ve reached out to Ubisoft for comment and will let you know if we hear anything.
