Oscars Rerun: Parasite and Joker to Screen in Malaysian Cinemas Again

We’re only a few days away from the 2020 Oscars! To celebrate, Malaysian cinemas will be re-releasing a couple of Best Picture Oscar-nominated films for a limited time only, in select theatres.

First up is Parasite. The South Korean film by Bong Joon-Ho has six nominated films under its belt — Best Picture, Best Director (Bong Joon-Ho), Best Original Screenplay (Bong Joon-Ho & Jin Won Han), Best International Film, Best Editing (Jinmo Yang) and Best Production Design (Ha-jun Lee & Won-Woo Choo).

The brilliance of this Bong Joon-Ho film is that it can be enjoyed on two levels. On the surface, it’s a fun, funny and exciting film about a poor family scamming a rich one. But behind the funny lines, exciting tone and suspenseful beats lie a chilling and dark commentary about the way our society is built. And for Bong Joon-Ho fans who were disappointed in his previous film, Okja, this is the master once again in form. Parasite is pure unadulterated Bong from start to finish — funny, suspenseful, unabashedly weird, bloody, manic and powerful.

Joker will also be re-releasing in Malaysian cinemas this Oscar season. The Todd Phillips masterpiece received 11 Oscar nominations — Best Picture, Best Director (Todd Phillips), Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Adapted Screenplay (Todd Phillps & Scott Silver), Best Cinematography (Lawrence Sher), Best Costume Design (Mark Bridges), Best Editing (Jeff Groth), Best Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir), Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

Joker is a wonderfully written, superbly crafted unnerving and frankly uncomfortable telling of a broken man with a tortured soul. The broken man is brought to life by Joaquin Phoenix, who delivers a heartbreaking performance of staggering genius that anchors the whole film.

Joker will be hitting cinemas on 13 February 2020 for one week.
