A Quiet Place 2 Director Discusses Why He Decided to Make a Sequel

A Quiet Place was one of the best films of 2018. It is also arguably one of the best horror films of the past decade. Director John Krasinski masterfully used sound editing and mixing to create an atmospheric cinematic experience unlike any other. But nobody, not a single soul, watched that film and wished for a sequel. The ending’s perfect and any more world-building can be left to the audience’s imagination. That said, it’s a movie budgeted at $US 17 million dollars that went on to gross over $US 340 million worldwide. Naturally, the studio demanded a sequel. And in about a month’s time, a sequel we will get.

In an interview with EWJohn Krasinski talked about how he didn’t want to do a sequel, but eventually convinced himself to do it when he began writing the script.

I totally understood why the studio wanted to do a sequel for financial reasons. I didn’t want anything to do with it because, weirdly, as much as I’m the writer-director, I’m also a huge fan of this movie. I didn’t want to be a part of anything that would be viewed as a cash grab.” But after Krasinski sat down to write at least an outline of Part II at the behest of the producers, Krasinski shared that he “Jedi-mindtricked [himself] into directing this thing.

Krasinski’s wife, the talented Emily Blunt who stars in both the original and the sequel, was convinced of Part II by Krasinski’s vision of a one-take shot showing the alien invasion, which we see in the trailer. The A Quiet Place Part II star said: “it became very apparent that we’d be idiots not to do it. Ultimately, you will never catch the [same] lightning in the film, but there is a bigger world.”

Krasinski also talked about the world that he has created and how it’s possible to put any hero or villain in it.

[In] sequels you have a hero or villain that you have to bring back and put in a new world. Well, the converse is true for us. We have this amazing world that you can put any hero or villain in.

A Quiet Place Part II hits cinemas this 19 March 2020.
