Avast To Winds Down Subsidiary That Sold Users’ Data To Third-Parties
Earlier this week, we reported on how a subsidiary of Avast, Jumpshot, was collecting and selling the personal user data from nearly 100 million devices and sold them to third-party marketing companies. In response to the allegations, Avast released an official statement, saying that it is ending all provision of data to Jumpshot. Consequently, it has also begun the winding down process of division.
In light of the winding down, Jumpshot says that it will continue paying both vendors and suppliers in full, both for services rendered and still in the process of being rendered. Further, the Avast subsidiary says that it will notify the rest of the customers of its termination of data services.
“Avast’s core mission is to keep its users safe online and to give users control over their privacy,'” Ondrej Vlcek, CEO of Avast, said in the statement. “We are vigilant about our users’ privacy, and we took quick action to begin winding down Jumpshot’s operations after it became evident that some users questioned the alignment of data provision to Jumpshot with our mission and principles that define us as a Company.”
