Instagram Expanding Efforts To Fend Off Misinformation

There are plenty of bogus content in social media which could potentially spread misinformation among users. In light of this, Instagram has announced that it is now expanding its fact-checking program globally to combat false information from spreading across its platform.

The program enables third-party fact-checkers to identify dodgy posts on Instagram, as well as those shared from Facebook. When content has been rated false or partly false, Instagram will reduce its distribution by removing it entirely from the Explore and Hashtag pages. On top of that, content such as these are then labeled with a “false information” overlay that explains why the content is untrustworthy.

According to Instagram, the overlay will link out to the rating from the fact-checker and provide links to articles from credible sources that debunk the claims made in the dodgy post. Content from accounts that repeatedly receive these labels will also be removed from the Explore and Hashtag pages to avoid further spread of misinformation.

The social media company stated it is dependent on a combination of its technology and community feedback to determine which content should be sent out to fact-checkers for review. Previously, Instagram added a “false information” feedback option for users in order to better identify and take action on potentially false information posted on its platform.
