In The Expanse Season 4, Durians Are Even Banned In Space

The mighty durian, often regarded as the king of all fruits. Dropped from a height, its skin is a deadly weapon, and when opened, it literally makes a stink wherever it is. It’s so bad that in season 4 of the sci-fi show, The Expanse, there are signs on Mars that effectively ban the fruit from being brought on-board the show’s space-age trains.

The signs were initially spotted by eagle-eyed viewer bill tng (@vanguy79) from Singapore, who posted a screenshot of what he thought was a “No Durians” sign briefly seen in the first episode of the new season. To his delight, Breck Eisner, the director for several episodes in the new season, confirmed the sighting by replying “That it is”.

The Expanse is sci-fi series based on novels written by James S. A. Corey and is set several hundred years in the future within a colonised star system. The show ran for three seasons on SyFy before being cancelled. Not long after, Amazon Prime picked up the show, allowing it to continue its run.

The “No Durian” sign is a nice touch and, in a way, a homage to both the Asian fruit and Southeast Asian countries like ours and Singapore. That said, it’s funny to think that fruit once described as custard made in a lavatory would even manage to make its way outside of earth and into the fringes of the galaxy.
