PS4 Cross-Play Now Available To All Developers

For whatever reason, Sony was not allowing many games to have access to cross-play on the PS4. When the company enabled the feature for Fortnite last year, it also said that it’s a feature that’s still in the beta phase. Now, it has left the beta phase, and is available to all other developers.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed this in an interview with Wired. This is just in time for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that’s coming out on 25 October. An Infinity Ward producer also sort of confirmed this on Twitter all the way back in June, though back then Sony was silent on the matter.

It’s about time too. Many other developers have been clamouring for cross-play since earlier in the year. With cross play now available, it remains to be seen if cross-progression will also be a thing somewhere down the line.

In the Wired interview, Ryan also said mentioned that winners of the generational platform wars don’t usually win in the next generation. While it suggests that he doesn’t want the PlayStation team to be complacent, the fact that the PS4 got cross-play so far behind other platforms seems to paint a different picture.
