What makes many of the tentpole Marvel Cinematic Universe movies so special is that they spark conversations and debates even months and years after its release. To this day people are still arguing about who’s right in Captain America: Civil War — Iron Man or Captain America? The same can be said about Star-Lord going off-plan and attacking Thanos on Planet Titan. There are many fans who still blame Star-Lord, claiming that if he hadn’t lost his cool, the snap wouldn’t have happened at all.

However, Avengers: Infinity War writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who also penned Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War and Endgame) wholeheartedly disagree. In an interview with Empire Film Podcast, the writers claim that not only is Star-Lord’s actions understandable, but many other Avengers screwed up just as much too.

McFeely: “He’s one of many [who screwed things up]. I don’t accept that,”

Markus: “I don’t think he screws [it up] — if you are standing in front of your girlfriend’s father and find out that he just killed your girlfriend, you’re gonna hit him in the face. I mean, there’s nothing that’s gonna stop you from hitting him in the face.

I just think it’s totally emotionally understandable, particularly when you add in the scene where he was supposed to kill her. I mean, it’s a pretty big mindf—k to be in a situation where you failed — where your failure was failing to kill your girlfriend — which then made it possible for her father to kill her. And to succeed the right thing you should have done as a good person was to murder your girlfriend. He’s under a lot of stress at the moment.”

The writers also went on to give Thor as an example, who didn’t go for Thanos’ head, leading to the Mad Titan’s escape. On top of that, McFeely also claims that the conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers is another reason why Thanos could vanquish our heroes with relative ease. Which makes perfect sense. After all, had Iron Man and Cap been on the same page, they could’ve come up with a better plan and organised their team accordingly.
