Endgame Writers Say Captain America Has Kids With Super Soldier DNA

Well, this is interesting, isn’t it? One of the most beautiful yet constantly debated about story beat in Avengers: Endgame is the ending with Captain America. After the gang defeats Thanos and attends Tony’s funeral, Steve Rogers goes back in (alternate) time to put back the Infinity Stones where they belong. When he comes back to the prime timeline, he’s an old man. He passes his shield to Sam Wilson AKA the next Captain America and we also learn that he got married to the love of his life, Peggy Carter.

Here’s what’s interesting: 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (also written by Markus and McFeely and helmed by the Russo brothers) establishes that Peggy Carter had a husband and two kids. Now it appears that they were secretly Steve Rogers’ kids all along. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely say that while they accept the different viewpoints from fans, in their minds, Steve has always been Peggy’s husband.

“It was always our intention that he was the father of those two children. But again, there are time travel loopholes for that. It does introduce the idea that there are two children who have somewhat super soldier DNA.”

There are a couple of major takeaways from the quote above. For one, even the writers themselves know that certain characters and story decisions made in the film will require some manoeuvring around potential time travel issues. Just like every other time travelling fantasy film, it’s best enjoyed without scrutinizing the logic too much. What’s important is that the film abides by its own rules, which for the most part, Endgame does.

But apart from that, did Markus and McFeely actually just drop a bomb about the potential existence of two new young superheroes in the universe? With Scott Lang’s daughter in her early teens, the kid from Iron Man 3 and now Captain America’s super children, the doors are certainly pushed wide open for a Young Avengers spinoff.
