AMD Could Release Radeon RX 640 Graphics Card Before Navi; Could Be Another Polaris Refresh

As AMD is expected to talk about its Navi GPU architecture during Computex this year, expectations of the new 7nm-based GPU are clearly running at an all-time high. However, a recent discovery leads us to believe that the CPU and GPU maker could be preparing to release a Radeon RX 640 graphics cards ahead of Navi.

The discovery was made by a TechPowerUp (TPU) forum member. Who was going through the code of AMD’s latest Adrenalin 2019 19.4.3 driver package. It was within the package’s “optional” update that he uncovered a reference to not one, but two Radeon RX640 variants. Variants that, at this point in time, do not officially exist.

That wasn’t the only GPU variant to be discovered in the driver package either. Serial leakster site, Videocardz, also did its own fair share of digging of the package and even found a reference to a Radeon RX 630.

More to the point, it looks like the cards could running Polaris Refresh GPUs; according to TPU, the Radeon RX 640 appears to have the same device ID as the Radeon RX 550X. Pegging it as an entry-level offering.

This isn’t the first time that AMD has rebranded its ageing GPU architecture; should this be real, it would be the fourth time the company has reused Polaris. Of course, nothing is set in stone and no official statement has been made by the company.

But, considering that the reference was found within an official driver release, it’s highly possible that we could be hearing something from AMD in the near and immediate future.
