Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 Modem Supports Both 5G and 4G Networks

In what seems to be yet another milestone in its 5G journey, Qualcomm earlier today has unveiled a new 5G modem called Snapdragon X55. The new 7nm chip is actually the second 5G modem from the company but it is still the first Snapdragon modem that able to support both 4G and 5G networks.

This is in contrast to the company’s first 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50 which was launched back in 2016. It is a 5G-exclusive chip which means manufacturers need to include a separate LTE modem for their devices in order for them to support both types of networks.

Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon X55 modem allows users to achieve 5G download speed of up to 7 Gbps and up to 3 Gbps for uploads. For 4G network, the modem is capable of reaching a maximum download speed of 2.5Gbps and 316Mbps for uploads.

The company also added that the modem not only able to be used for smartphones but it is also designed for laptops, tablets, mobile hotspots, wireless access points, extended reality devices, and automotive-related devices. The new Snapdragon X55 modem is expected to be available on devices towards late 2019.
