Google announces new Assistant-powered Echo Show competitor, the Home Hub

Home Hub

At the company’s launch event today in New York, Google announced its smart home assistant Echo Show competitor, the display-clad Home Hub.

Google says that the Home Hub aims to create “a more helpful, thoughtful home,” by giving users the ability to view responses from Assistant, rather than just hearing them. Specific Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, Calendar and Photos, have all been revamped with Home Hub in mind.

Further, Google says that the smart home device will feature “deep integration” with Nest devices and accessories. Google also says that Hub’s display is capable of adjusting to the ambient light present in a room thanks to a dedicated sensor that adjusts the screen’s colour in real time.

Unlike the Echo Show, which is finally coming to Canada, as well as Facebook’s recently announced Portal device, there isn’t a camera featured on Google’s Home Hub.

The sleek-looking smart home device follows the same design language as past Google Home devices, though there are new colours available this time around, including ‘Mint,’ ‘Pink,’ ‘Charcoal,’ and ‘Chalk’

The Home Hub is launching in the U.S. for $149 USD (approximately $193 CAD) on October 22nd. Given that past Google Home devices didn’t launch in Canada first, it’s unclear if the Home Hub will drop in the Canadian market immediately.

We’ve reached out to Google for more information and will update this story when we hear back.

More to come…
