GST In Malaysia To Be Zero-Rated Starting From 1 June 2018

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia will be reduced from the existing rate of 6% to 0% starting from 1 June 2018. While you might have encountered a fake announcement regarding it few days ago, today’s announcement is as real as it can get.

In general, the move was made possible due to the major victory that Pakatan Harapan has achieved in the recent General Election. In fact, the abolishment of GST is the first on the list of 10 matters that the coalition has promised to deliver within the first 100 days of its administration.

In an official statement by Ministry of Finance earlier today, the new rule will be applied nationwide starting from the date that we’ve mentioned above. However, being zero-rated doesn’t mean retailers no longer need to document their tax invoices though as the documentation regulations for businesses remained the same.

We expect this move will affect the pricing of consumer electronics and services throughout the country in a major way. So, let’s see how things will change in two weeks time.
