Apple Music reaches 50 million users

Apple Music

Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that 50 million people are now using Apple Music.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Cook noted that this figure includes both paying subscribers and those taking advantage of free trials.

Apple previously confirmed in April that it had surpassed 40 million worldwide paying subscribers, with an additional eight million trying out the service through free trials.

For comparison, rival music streaming service Spotify announced earlier this month that it has hit 75 million paid subscribers, although the company has an eight-year head start on Apple in this market.

Bloomberg also asked Cook about Apple’s plans for original video content, although the executive declined to offer specifics. “We are very interested in the content business. We will be playing in a way that is consistent with our brand,” Cook told Bloomberg. “We’re not ready to give any details on it yet. But it’s clearly an area of interest.”

Altogether, Apple is reportedly spending at least $1 billion on original content offerings, which the company is expected to begin releasing in March 2018.

Some of the series Apple is developing include a revival of Steven Spielberg’s ’80s anthology series Amazing Stories, an original drama from La La Land writer-director Damien Chazelle, a Kristen Wiig-led scripted comedy series and a drama series inspired by the childhood of NBA star Kevin Durant.
