YouTuber Retrofits Apple iPod Classic With M.2 SATA SSD

The iPod Classic, while discontinued in 2014, is considered by many who used it to be one of Apple’s best portable music players ever made. Rather than allowed to fade away into the annals of history, one hobbyist brought it upon him refit with the device with something a modern M.2 SSD.

The hobbyist in question is the Australia-based YouTuber, DankPods, and is known for modding old consumer tech devices and retrofitting them with more recent components. To be precise, the M.2 SSD that he fitted was just a SATA SSD and not NVMe. As you can see for yourself, the video is filled with many hilarious moments – mostly brought on by DankPods’ quick wit and comments.

The retrofitting of the M.2 SATA SSD begins ant the 9:34 mark of the video. As DankPods makes clear, the attempt isn’t without mistakes; He admits that he didn’t know that M.2 SATA SSDs came in different lengths before purchasing an M.2 2280 instead of a 2242 size. Leaving the M.2 SATA to protrude out and beyond the actual length of the iPod Classic.

But even after several janky modifications involving an iFlash tinker board, some masking tape and a rubber band, the M.2 SATA SSD was surprisingly accepted by the jerry-rigged iPod Classic and even ran the content loaded on to it.
