Mozilla Firefox Update 78 Bug Causes Search Engines To Disappear; Fix Already Available

If you use the Mozilla Firefox browser, you may have noticed an update was rolled out recently. But after installing the update, you may have noticed your search engines not being there anymore. The company has acknowledged that this is a bug with the browser’s update 78, and has since released update 78.0.1 as a fix.

Mozilla Firefox normally comes with Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Amazon and Wikipedia as its default search engines. The update 78 for the browser caused its local database, which stores search engine data, to stop working. This broke the search service to also stop working which, in effect, broke a number of other things. These inclused the likes of the auto-complete in the address bar and the search box on the New Tab page.

As a result of this, Mozilla froze the rollout of update 78, and quite soon after, released update 78.0.1. The update’s release note reads “Fixed an isse which would cause installed search engines to not be visible when upgrading from a previous release”.

The turnaround from the bug’s discovery to its fix is pretty quick. Which is great, because update 78 is quite the major update for the Mozilla Firefox browser. According to its release notes, version 78 came with various security fixes.
