2021 Mercedes-Benz W223 S-Class To Feature AR-Based HUD Technology
Mercedes-Benz has revealed that it will feature an Augmented Reality (AR) based Heads-up Display (HUD) on its 2021 flagship sedan, the W223 S-Class. According to a video presentation released by the German automaker, the HUD is designed to be projected onto the car’s windscreen and will display information such as indicators, alerts and notifications in real-time.
To achieve this form of projected AR, Mercedes-Benz uses a digital mirror device (DMD) developed by Texas Instruments. The DMD features a resolution of 1.3MP, and projects onto a 10˚ horizontal and 5˚ vertical aperture HUD, with the image appearing 33ft away. A mock demonstration of the AR HUD in action can be viewed via the video below.
As showcased in the video, the company’s AR-based Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is capable of providing you with the information such as distance of a car in front of you, showing turning indicators during navigation, and even alerting you if you’re too close to the edge of the road. This is made possible by using the data gathered by the various sensors from the vehicle.

The other car maker that is also including AR HUD technology is Audi, where it will be featured in their upcoming Q4 e-tron Sportsback SUV. However, the company had not revealed much information regarding their version of the technology, so its uncertain if it will be similar to what Mercedes-Benz have designed for their 2021 W223 S-Class.
