Penang May Hold Off Implementing RMCO; Will Continue CMCO Until Then (Update)

UPDATE (2:40 PM): Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that Penang will have to implement the RMCO with the rest of the country. During the press conference earlier today, he said any state regulations that go against regulations on the federal level are rendered invalid.

ORIGINAL STORY (1:59 PM): 

Yesterday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO). This will replace the Conditional MCO that we currently have in place, which is scheduled to end on 9 June. That being said, Penang may not be implementing the RMCO immediately come 10 June.

Instead, the state will only enforce the RMCO once the state fine tunes the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the state government will do so during a Penang Security Council Committee meeting on 9 June. When that’s done, the state will issue a statement.

Should Penang decide to implement the RMCO on 10 June, then that will be the end of that. If not, then the state will continue to enforce the CMCO until it is ready to implement the RMCO.

The implementation of the RMCO means the loosening of restrictions. These include allowing people to travel between states again, and the resumption of certain businesses like markets and barbers. Schools will also reopen soon, with more details on those to be announced soon.

That being said, there are still activities and businesses that will still be prohibited. This includes the likes of contact sports, theme parks, and other social activities that will lead to the congregation of a large number of people. This will be in effect until 31 August.
